This is a note I found from a messageboard, just to give you some idea of what goes on with the Daytona:

Rolex DAYTONA 6239 PAUL NEWMAN with SS band! PRICES at recent auctions were higher! One in very good condition sold in the April 13, 2003 Geneva auction for a little over $25k and another sold in the NYC May 8, 2002 auction in very good condition for $32,200! Sell for $27,500 or TRADE!

The Daytona Chronograph line has always been popular and held value well. This is the case in SS, two-tune, solid gold, white gold with leather strap,,etc. All Daytonas hold value. They are not produced in high numbers. A late 1960's Daytona with Paul Newman dial just broke a record for a watch sold at auction for the highest price ever. Something like $360k!! Anyway, I guess I didn't really answer your question but, to me it is so popular because it looks better than any watch I have ever seen!!

Here is a link to a 2003 Daytona with Paul Newman Dial:

Why would one Paul Newman dial Daytona sell for $360k at one auction and at another auction in the $25k to $32k range like you state in another post? Am i missing something?

Yeah, I couldn't believe it when I saw it. I was at the jeweler and reading through one of his books saw two Paul Newman Daytonas taht broke a record for the most expensive watch ever sold at auction or at that particular auction. One sold for like $330k and the aformentioned one for $360k. In any case, in essesnce, the Paul Newman is just a dial style. It seems to be pretty much a standard Daytona with the Newman dial!!

The new Cartier Roadster Chrono might be the hottest out.

I am not a fan of Cartier at all. It appears to be small even though it isn't. This watch actually seems busier to me than the Daytona and I do not like how it looks or feels on my arm. Doesn't seem to be as shiny or as dramatic as the Rolex. Anyway to each his own. BTW, Pistol which watch can't you stand the one with the Paul Newman dial or the Daytona in general?

Here is the Cartier Roadster Chrono-------
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...category=31387

and the Rolex Daytona the way I like it------
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...tem=2675315714

Here is a Frank Muller King Conquiestador Chrono(also very difficult to obtain and very expensive. This is a steel watch that retails for $18k+)-------

Even though the shape is similar to Cartier, I saw one in person, looks much more dramatic and much larger. It really says Fu** You, mines bigger than yours peewee

Lou

EDIT---I fixed one of the links that didn't work. Cheers

The Roadster over a Daytona anyday, the roadster is a classier watch, I disagree with your comments, to each his own.

I have a brand new Rolex SS White face Daytona for sale. Never worn. I promised the wife I would sell it since she let me purchase my C4S. I would prefer to sell it locally . I paid approx. $8,900. I have all the paper works and reciepts . You can even call the jeweler to confirm my purchase. PM me if you are interested.
Having heard this from about four authorized Rolex dealers, I was under the impression that an authorized dealer cannot mark-up Rolex's, nor mark them down? If that is true, then $8,900 to a authorized dealer for a $6,000 (about) watch does not sound right?

Is my info wrong?

Doug you absolutly right. But sometime we have to do what we have to do to get what we want. It's the beauty of supply and demand...

Not that this matters in the overall scheme of life, but I understand you are saying that the authorized Rolex dealer you bought the watch from charged you thousands over list placing his continued status as an authorized dealer at risk?

Anyway, that's OK I guess. Glad that you were able to get what you wanted are are pleased. They are great watches!

I just confirmed with my dealer that I get one of the very next batch of SS Daytonas that arrive... and at list ($6,100). WhooHooo
