Diamond Question for those knowledgeable

in such things.......

Clarity Enhanced Diamonds...seems like a good value...not looking for investment quality......just big, sparkly and nice looking and they seem to fit the bill.....reasons NOT to consider one?

Chris

Oh and what I am looking at specifically is this for $5000ish (with a nice setting)

Shape:RoundWeight:2.25 ct Color:G Clarity:SI2 Clarity Enhanced Cut:Very Good Measurements:8.25X5.35

Chris,
I dont sell clarity enhanced diamonds for a variety of reasons, although there is a market for them. If this is something you have your heart set on I can procure one for you although it will be more then the high 5's u have seen. If you are content with what you have been looking at that may be your best route. I have alot of stones on special right now, let me know how I can help you.

J

Sorry for the NOOB question - but what is clarity enhanced? I'm sure my wife will soon be asking why I haven't already bought her more diamonds...

clarity enhanced is when you take a flawed diamond and synthetically improve its appearance. this is usually done with lasers or chemicals which fill the "cracks."

chris, my point is that a similarly graded stone with a natural, less noticible flaw will probably cost more than double that. in my opinion, this means that the clarity enhanced diamond is truly not worth it. i would guess that the si2 grade is after the enhancement? also, i would guess that the table and depth are not proportioned ideally. i'd like to hear jason's professional take on this. jason, i would also like to know why you choose not to sell these types of stones.

OXYGEN8 is infamous around these parts
anyone who knows diamonds will tell ya that Cut > * > Clarity > Color

An excellent cut SI1 diamond will stand out over an avg cut VS1. I cant stress enough that women are looking for the bling factor and only way to ensure that is a EX EX EX or ID ID ID cut.

Oh yea ... talk to Jason. He knows his isht!

Stay away from Clarity enhanced diamonds too!

Clarity Enhancement more often then not refer to whats is called laser drilling or fracture filling, to keep it simple lets say you have a heavily included diamond, you can increase its market value by visibly "reducing" the inclusions. The reason reduce is in quotes is lets say you have a black inclusion (inclusions come in all colors mostly white, black green and sometimes red) and it is visible to the the naked eye looking through the table, you can drill a hole with a laser and bleach out or vaporize the black inclusion, now you are left with a stone that no longer has an eye visible inclusion but did you really get rid of it, well no because now you have a laser tube in your diamond which is itself an inclusion...almost redundant in a way. The GIA doesnt grade diamonds that have had non-permanent treatments, a laser drill is permanent but fracture filling is not. Fracture filling is not permanent and can lower a diamonds color, the filling can be damaged by high heat and chemicals from the various cleaning methods, when damaged they can be refilled.

I sell what I know to be a quality product, I want my clients coming back to me for another purchase, not because I sold them something that may have issues down the road. I sell what I consider to be a high-end product and nothing but the best stones with the proper documentation go into my work. I hope this clears some thing up, please feel free to ask more questions.

I cant answer for the stone in question Mark because I dont know who graded it or how they grade or if it came with a grading report but the grading is supposed to be the after the enhancement. This is the reason I, and you mark, only buy diamonds of signifigance that have an independent grading report with all the disclosures. Most of these enhanced stone dealers grade their own stones and provide their own reports.
