Any good ideas for volunteering?

All,

I have been looking for some opportunities to do some volunteering or charity work. Since I don't have tons of money, the next best thing is time. It has been hard to find so far. I think part of my problem is I have a fairly heavy work schedule with some unknown travel that might pop up at times. The one place I tried to volunteer at wanted me every week at a specific time. I opted to not volunteer there since I couldn't promise them I would make it every week (I'm in the military). The other problem is some of the places I called or e-mailed simply didn't return the call or e-mail! Simply amazes me since they say they are looking for volunteers.

Anyway, I was hoping some of you would have some good ideas for me or know of a couple opportunities. Thanks!

How about hospitals? I used to volunteer at George Town University and NoVA fairfax hospital when I was Junior at college. That was couple of years ago. Schedules are very flexible depending on department.

Did you try calling your local Parks and Recreation Dept. or Boys and Girls Club?

or the animal shelters. i used to volunteer to brush the pets, feed them, take the dogs out for walks. i used to go when i had extra time. they weren't expecting me any specific days or times. i could stay as long or as little as i wanted. check it out!

many of the pets were abused and all of them have been adandoned or taken from their owner due to neglect.

it's a good feeling to make them happy for a few mins. a day by spending some quality time with them. =)

^^^^^completely Agree. I Am An Animal Buff And Am Actually Planning On Doing This With My Wife (giving Spare Time To The Shelters).......

Then On The Side, I'm Going To Spend The Rest Of My Spare Time Giving These Owners Who Abused And Neglected These Animals A Taste Of Their Own Medicine...........

Travis, how about Wounded Warriors? My company donates to them and I believe they would allow you to volunteer there, I can have my Facility person look into this if you'd like.

Thanks everyone for the ideas. I think I have been looking so hard for anything that I needed some perspective and allow myself to open the aperture a little. All of the suggestions are good ones and I will try looking into them shortly. Thanks again!
