2019 is in our rearview, and 2020 could not have started off better! A couple of friends approached me during the day on 12/31/19 - they wanted to get a few car people together for a one-off cars & coffee on New Year's Day. As it turns out, our normal Sunday venue - Cameron's - was closed for the day. We decided to gather a few good friends at a venue we had used several times, a few years ago - the Applebees parking lot at Fair Lakes Center. The stars aligned, and we arrived to find 17 cars, driven by 17 friends!
A good variety of enthusiast rides were represented: 4 Porsche 911's, 2 Lotus Esprits, a Porsche Cayenne, a '32 Ford Roadster, a Ford GT, a Lotus Elise, a Caterham 7, a Superlite, an MGA, an Aston Martin DB9, a Corvette, a Cadillac and a Dodge Viper. To my mind, a perfect combination of interesting cars and sympatico people.
It's possible we will use this venue - with coffee at the Starbuck's across the street - occasionally in the future. Several years ago, we ran into problems at the Starbuck's down the road, at the Kohl's parking lot. A few bad actors, more interested in infantile driving stunts than anything else, caused the management company to have the police close down the whole event. We learned from that, we need to be cognizant that a large gathering is likely to attract some undesirables. As a result, we are cautious about large gatherings.
