Houston, TX - New to Porsche, but have always dreamed of one...

I have always been a fan of the Porsche 911 Turbo. I was just about to purchase a e63 AMG or c63 AMG but I read about a deadbolt problem they had that caused 5-10% of the engines to leak coolant into the block and bye bye motor. The cost to replace new engine was 27,000 w/o labor and the price just to replace the faulty deadbolts was $4,000 w/o parts. Mercedes knows about the problem, has issued a bulletin about it, and has even made notation in the parts catalog not to use the old headbolts BUT has not stepped up and done a recall or covered ANY of the costs to repair. So, needless to say I was reserved about purchasing a brand that did everything it could to screw it's customers.

I started to look at other cars and my wife told me just to spend another 20k and get what I REALLY wanted. So, now I am looking for a 07-09 911 Turbo. I am super excited and cannot wait to find one. I've been looking for a few weeks now and have some I am deciding between. Can't wait to join ya'll and experience what I know I will LOVE. I plan to use this car as my daily driver (on nice days, no rain) for the next couple years and then transition it to a weekend car. Anyone have any input on whether I am making a mistake by DD a 07-09 997tt about 50-60 miles each day? I am in Houston and traffic sucks.

I know plugs need to be changed every 4 years or 30k miles. Tires and brakes need to be alternated b/t both sets and front brakes/rear tires. Other than that, should I anticipate any other expenses?

Thanks a lot...

Welcome, enjoy your hunt!

I drive mine any day it doesn't rain in Houston traffic and I have no issues and mine is 6 speed.

If you can find one with the coolant pipes 'pinned' or welded already, that would be nice as that is a fairly common issue to these cars, especially as the mileage starts to accumulate.

If you go 6 speed, your clutch accumulator will fail at some point, many swap to the GT2 setup or similar to remove the accumulator and get a much more solid clutch feel. I'm in the process of that now, mine is starting to go so I'm just waiting on the part to swap it out.

Good luck in your search. They are great cars and will treat you well if taken care of.

How can you tell if it's had the coolant lines pinned or welded? I think I am leaning towards a tiptronic Bc of traffic as a DD and less cost to maintain...I.e.clutch replacement etc. also I like the idea of being able to spool turbos off the line to go faster....

You may just ask the dealership or previous owner, typically if someone has done that, they would be sure to advertise it as it isn't cheap.

tough to really tell with the engine the car (some pictures and info included in thread below):
