New to this site and Porsche

I now own my first Porsche and need to get to know other Porsche owners and also get up to speed on the mechanics and systems. I do most of my own work, have an extensive tool set, built and raced drag racing cars in my early days, and am now deep into BMWs, having built and campaigned a dedicated track car. I raced that car for several years, sold it and now own and track an M3 E92 with the v8. Most of my track driving now is at driving schools, instructing students and having fun driving tracks across the midwest. I live in Minnesota in the Twin Cities area. I have been retired since 2002.

I bought a 2013 Cayenne Diesel last November and love it. I was specifically looking for the Diesel so that I could tow my M3 on my aluminum trailer, and my wife and I want to visit National Parks towing a small travel trailer. My wife has a bad back and couldn't get into the X5 (my original leanings) and the Cayenne was low enough for her to enter. I also wanted the Porsche brakes and additional things they do to them after they come off the line.

I am hoping I can draw on the experience of other gearheads in this forum to do a lot of maintenance and repair things on my own.

I will be removing the front shell today or tomorrow to get at the problematic park assist. I'll post something afterward about what it took to get at it. I haven't gotten any advice from my other post on the problem.

So far, I haven't seen much deep technical stuff on this site, but I am new to it. There are BMW sites that really go into depth on things like the OBDII programming, performance builds, etc.

Welcome to 6Speed, Captain Dave! Sounds like you're very DIY savvy. I'd say you made a good choice with the Cayenne over the X5. If you ever need anything please don't hesitate to let me know. I hope you and your wife enjoy the new P car!

We love it. I know we took a chance with the diesel, but I keep my vehicles many years ( I just sold my 2002 E46 Cab to my son) so I am not worried about the resale value. I track my 2008 M3 at driving schools, and at 71 years old, I am going to keep it pretty stock, but I haul it on an aluminum trailer after I change tires and brakes for an event. I wanted the torque of the Cayenne for the towing. So far, the only irritating thing about the Cayenne is the Bose radio. It plays every time you start the car, whether you had it on before you shut the car off, or whether you were playing a CD or jukebox. My inquiry to Porsche said it was working as designed.

I have bought parts from you in the past and I really appreciate your site. After building drag racing cars for years, I needed all the help I could get in 1997 when I bought my 95 M3 and your site was queried often.
