exhaust question

i would like to know the sound difference between a non cat but resonated midpipe with a catback vs a non cat, non res midpipe alone?

i had a non cat, non res on previous gtr and sounded ok. now i have a new gtr that sounds better stock than the previous one did. not sure if i should go with same midpipe or the res midpipe with a catback.

im thinking that the midpipe just makes everything louder but doesnt change the sound quality much. a catback would maybe make it higher pitched but not sure.

thanks

ps i asked this on gtrlife.com and didnt get a clear answer. bet we can do it right here.

I think it would be hard to answer this, because different combinations of different materials/vendors/etc...

I purchased a double resonated, non-cat mid-pipe, because I wanted better airflow, but less noise.

Works perfectly. But it depends on the combination of other parts (stock mid-pipe back, and downpipes, etc...).

Also which dimension (76mm OEM, 80mm Amuse, 85mm HKS, 90mm Greddy/SPE/MANY, 102mm Titan, etc...)?

Curious as to why you believe your new GT-R sounds 'better' than previous one - engine has identical exhaust package. Perhaps you remember it differently?

they had to have made a change from 12 to 13 even if nissan doesnt talk about it. my 12 had a very distinct sound at idle that i did not like. it was almost like a cat crying. went away with the midpipe. the new car is still too quiet for the performance it has but at least they got rid of that crying sound. i had recordings of it but i lost them. btw, i feel the transmission was changed too with much less noise when shifting from p to n to r to d. even the hvac switches have a different feel to them despite look identical. the 13 is superior to 12 imo

anyway, with all the exhaust variables you talk about it seems impossible to know what youre going to get before you buy it. this is what they told me on gtrlife too. the labor to take off the ground effects to gain access is $ too. i hate to buy something thats either too loud or quiet then have to pay again to re do it.

oh well

jaspergtr has it right. One good mid pipe is SBD resonated. No drone inside but much improved sound out back. I also don't seem to hear a different sound stock 09 vs 2013 etc.

Engine had a small adjustment in intake/exhaust somethings...
Transmission had a small upgrade (forks and such), but the change you notice is the new TCM program. People with Cobb AccessPorts can make this same change with the NIS-006 APs.

There are no panels that need to be removed to gain access to the mid-pipe. It is the EASIEST mod to do, with minimal labor.

If you purchase one, and don't like it, I'm sure it'll be an easy resale on either forum.
