I'm traveling to SF and plan on taking my 16 yr old son down to Big Sur along the PC Hwy. Inquiring about cool cars to drive while we're there opened my eyes to the ridiculous costs of doing so. These exotic car rental companies wanted $1000+ a day for a Carrera convertible and $2000+ for a Gallardo Spyder. It would be a complete waste to travel these roads in a crappy Avis rental. Even V6 Mustang Convertibles are >$135 a day.
I would be happy to return the favor of loaning my 2008 Cayman S or 2008 Audi A3 (if more room is needed) to anyone traveling to South FL if they were to let me use their car when I fly to SF June 15. I would probably want to borrow it for 3 days or so.
My car has full insurance coverage as I'm sure yours does too. I have about $25,000 in go fast and track mods on the Cayman S too. You guys may recognize me from the Corvette Forum, MBWorld, VWVortex, or other car forums under the same username.

Hwy 1, weekend in June? I'd stay at home.
I genuinely wish you good luck, sorry I can't help.
I'm chiming in to say that' you're probably better off with the Mustang.
There are a lot of great drives in northern/central CA (and I mean _great_ drives), and Hwy1 between Carmel and SLO should be on everyone's bucket list. But the weekend of June 15 will, I'm afraid, be hugely disappointing.
Weekends are infamous for crawling along a very busted-up roadway for hours behind columns of motorhomes. Plus there's always construction, which can catch you out for a long time--or even redirect you way over the coast range for a hundred miles or more.
See the http://thebigsurblog.com/ and the caltrans page (enter "1" for the highway, see the "Central California Area" section: http://dot.ca.gov/cgi-bin/roadscell.cgi
If that sounds discouraging, well, you might get lucky. I'm about 50% for all the times I've done the drive (4 times in a 997-1 Carrera S, many more in a '59 356 Coupe), but only one good one was in the summer months. As a Floridian, I'm sure you know the tourist drill and how early spring and late fall are when it is really worth venturing out. And we, like FL, do have top-down weather most of the year (fog notwithstanding--which can get you any day or all day).
I'm just saying that if you're going to do it in a P-car, you should optimize your opportunity. Save the trade for the "off months", when the visitors (erm, like yourself, sir) are gone and the roads open up. Try it out in the rental Mustang, and if you have to bounce the doors off some motorhome bumpers in a necessary pass, well, that's what Visa insurance is for.
I would highly recommend flying into SFO,OAK,SJC and driving down to the Porsche Literature show and all the open house activities around the L.A. Basin which happens every Jan. IIRC, most of my "good" drives on Hwy1 have been to/from that event.
I did get lucky a couple years ago during the summer. It was a mid-week drive, late afternoon, and there were still long bouts of traffic and one-way lane controls. But as you can see from these pictures, there are some really nice views: http://www.photoshop.com/users/cmark...931035e#page=1
Best of luck in your adventure.
