A Few Toys I picked up :)
grenade launcher! yep even Todd could hit the side of a tractor trailer from 10ft with. Mount it on top of the Turbo and move to Cuba.
Picked up this one a couple of years ago. Then picked up a Glock 19. Used to own a few more but they were sold off over the years. Something about military service and a nice weapons collection. Love the Tommy.

my advice would be to go to a range and rent -- then buy what feels good to you.
The range I go to in Everett has a one day rental rate and as long as you purchase the ammo from them, you can try all the rental guns for that one rate...
I think it is $20 or something... they have all the sigs, kimbers, glocks etc...
If I am not mistaken, you can even apply your rental money towards the purchase etc.
If you are looking at all the good brand names, the difference is in how it feels in your hands...
All the top companies make a pretty good product.

+1 to what PJ said. that's exactly what i did. I went to Bullseye in Tacoma and shot a bunch of different guns before I bought my first. If I was going to have just one handgun, i'd probably buy a 9mm because the ammo is much cheaper, its easier to shoot so you'll probably practice more. The reality is the best gun for protection is the one in your hand that you shoot the best!
I also have a lot fun at the range shooting a .22
