Back in Seattle? The Tuesday meet is still going - only it's @ Crapplebee's on 140th now.
I'll have to try to make an applebee tuesday one of these days. Would love to check out your porsche (maybe Ray's GT-R as well?).

I haven't had any issues so far. Granted, I moved here in April and I'm still rocking a Wisconsin plate! It's good until April of next year.

Good until you get pulled over...
When you move to Washington State, you have 30 days to title and register your vehicle.
I moved from Cali over 21 years ago and tried the same thing.. it didn't take too long before I got pulled over for wearing CA plates.

Good luck!

Vic, your are right that they only have 30 days. Oh and the fine for not doing it with in 30 days is $1122.00. The most expensive ticket in the state.

The tabs in this state are so cheap anyway, it makes no sense to mess around.

What is cheap?

And how would they know it's been over 30 days?

You'd be surprised at what information comes up on a computer used in a patrol car.

Here it is on a silver platter:

The average car tabs in WA St avg $50. (by weight) Cars are lowest
I don't know if there are fees for title registration transfers, you got pay them sooner or later, so don't risk getting busted over the small change.

One-time fee to verify the vehicle identification number (VIN) when registering an out-of-state vehicle in Washington for first time $15
(Paid to DOL with registration fees)

You have to take your car to the State Patrol office for the one time check to verify the VIN before the title can transfer under this state. Important to a lien-holder.

so big 5.0 i am curious about the guys who buy their cars in oregon and keep them registered there because they have a vacation home or spend a chunk of time down there. what's the deal there. i thought the law you state above was the same for them. some guys do this to save the sales tax. should i have registered all of my cars to idaho to match my home there?

I think people are getting confused between SALES TAX on the car and plain old Vehicle Registration and plates with tabs.

If you are a NEW resident to Washington State and your car was purchased in another state and had been registered there for at least 91 days..there WILL be NO SALES TAX due when you transfer your registrration to Washington Plates. You will pay a small DOL transfer fee and of course the current plate and tab amounts for your car and its registration, which does very depending on where your car is going to make its home..i.e., currently an adress WITHIN the City Limits of Seattle is the MOST exspensive. The least is any UN-Incorperated County east of the mountains. For the west side a UN-incorperated county adress will almost ALWAYS be cheaper than a IN CITY adress. If you just moved here and fit this BILL you are CRAZY not to swith your plates, if you are here more than 30 days and get caught it is a hugh ticket and not worth the headache.

If you are a Washington State resident currently, which is determined by having either a voter registration car in this state or a current drivers license, then you have a few options.

1) Purcahse a car out of state, via private party, e-bay another dealer etc etc..once it lands in Washington State you have to title it and register as well as pay the sales tax on the selling price, currently 9.8% EVERYWHER in the state for a vehicle. Of course a lot of folks that buy from a private party FUDUGE on the price to save sales tax, but most Dealers wont as we can be forced to show all our records to other state auditres and can get in big trouble if we fudge for you. However NO MATTER how much you fudge you will always pay at least the blue book value of tax as per the states computer UNLESS you can prove the car is salvaged title or some other major problem.

2) You can purchase the car out of State and pay THEIR sales tax due at time of sale, then when you return to Washington State you most of the time, with some exceptions will only pay the difference in the sales tax rate or have a small road use tax added. WHY would people do this..BECAUSE most other states will NOT allow the Dealer to releas the car to you to drive it of the lot unless you have paid sales tax. So if you want to go out of state and buy and drive, you have to pay their tax...or have the car shipped to you.

3) On a lot of high end cars, the new thing is to get a TPO, "Tilte purpose only" Of course you would have to have bought the car cash, finance house will not allow this. Then you pay NO SALES tax at all, BUT the car is not allowed on the road as it has no plates or registration...BUT you can buy "trip permits" for three day periods..a lot cheaper. If you buy an exspensive car and know you are only going to drive it short periods of times, this may be the way to go.

4) As far as out of state plates to escape taxes with out of state residents...there is nothing illegal about it. AS LONG as you have a primamry vehicle titled and registered to Washington and YOU CAN prove if, required....which they have the right to do...that the out of state plated vehicle has not remained in the state for more than 181 consecutive days...so like gas reciepts with plate numberout of the stae, car wash reciept, service reciepts...picture with date stamp and location verifyed..to be honest with you I have NEVER had the state go that far, AS LONG as you have a primary vehicle here...oh and of liek type..in another words not 4 Lambos in Oregon and a Chevy pick em up truck here LOL

One last thing, they do not often come after this, as of last there was only 2 investigateros for the west side and one for the east, BUT when they do..it is not good. Almost EVERYONE I knwo that has screwed and tried to take advantage of this has had HUGH fines with intrest alonf with REAL JAIL time of 5 to 10 days.

You have to recall that anytime a patrol car enters your plate, for stop, for checking, parking ticket as well as now the narrows tool bridge it goes into a computer system that automatically SENDS this info tot he investigators when you hit the target dates..and as a former Officer, I can tell you many many times we simply enter out of state plates for this reason, you do not HAVE to get stopped to have your plate entered into the system.

On a side note, I do know they have in the works to charge a road use tax fee for people that voluntary go in and get theri plates switched from out of stae, hwoever the computer shows its been here more than 30 days..i.e. waited say 60-90 days...they have yet to work out the fee schedule, but it is coming.

Also alot of folks are not aware that if you purchase another car, your trade in, if you have one is a TOTAL TAX credit against your new purchase..BUT ONLY if it is done via a Dealer and within 6 months of the sale of your old tade in...you are seeing more and more Dealers, such as myself, happy to do the paperwork for a small fee as the tax savings can be HUGH.
