Best driving road?

Hi Everyone.

What would you is the best driving stretch of road that is within 1~2 hours from Bellevue/Seattle?

Lots of bends/turns with cornering speed in the 30~40mph range so you need to actually downshift?

Doesn't need to be scenic. Just fun to drive.

Any thoughts?

I would recommend North Cascades Hiway,SR20.There are sections with tight corners, sweeping corners and nice straights. You would need to drive the road early in the day to avoid traffic, the occasional sheriff or state patrol.Fuel is available in Marblemount on the west side,or Winthrop/Twisp on the east side.

I don't know about "best." But I use mapping software to find back roads. Yesterday, I mapped & drove a back road outing from Issaquah to Auburn for interesting drives, then loaded it onto my GPS for driving.

I drove this route on Saturday. Pretty good. About 1 mile of it was rough pavement (marked by signs). No significant gravel along route. A few slower sections (esp. through towns). Good turns & elevation changes. If your gps can import a .gpx file, I can send you one:

1 From I-405, E on I-90
2 Exit 17, Front Street, keep right 8.7 mi 0:09:26
3 Front St becomes Issaquah Hobart Rd 9.0 mi 0:09:53
4 Turn left onto SE Kent-Kangley Rd 23.3 mi 0:32:56
5 Turn right onto Retreat-Kanaskat Rd SE 24.4 mi 0:35:04
6 Turn right onto Cumberland Kanaskat Rd SE 27.5 mi 0:39:21
7 Turn right onto SE Green River Gorge Rd 31.6 mi 0:45:31
8 Turn left onto Enumclaw-Franklin Rd SE 33.7 mi 0:50:13
9 Turn right onto SE 385th St 37.5 mi 0:55:12
10 Turn right onto Enumclaw-Black Diamond Rd SE 37.6 mi 0:55:40
11 Turn left onto Jones Lake Rd 41.2 mi 1:00:29
12 Turn left onto Morgan St 42.2 mi 1:03:04
13 Keep right onto Lake Sawyer Rd SE 42.8 mi 1:04:29
14 "Winds along lake, becomes 224th Ave SE" 44.3 mi 1:06:47
15 Turn left onto SE Covington-Sawyer Rd 45.4 mi 1:08:48
16 Turn left onto 180th Ave SE 47.7 mi 1:13:29
17 Turn right onto SE Auburn Black Diamond Rd 50.0 mi 1:17:54
18 Turn left onto E Main St 56.5 mi 1:29:29
19 Turn right onto M St NE 56.7 mi 1:30:16
20 Turn right onto Auburn Way N 57.8 mi 1:32:12
21 Turn left onto 15th St
22 Turn right Hwy 167 North
23. North, I-405 to return to Bellevue

(The forum software removed the tab characters which make a table,
add them to separate direction, mile marker and time to make this more readable.)

Including driving to Bellevue from Auburn, about a 2hr drive. Saturday mid-day, I encountered little traffic on the back roads.

Forest Road 70 just past Greenwater. It's about 15 miles long from Hwy 410 until it turns to gravel.

I like Ben Howard Road. That will put you up in Sultan, and from there head up Sultan Basin road until it turns to gravel and turn around.

Never thought of 70 for driving the Maser. I know it like the back of my hand as it is ussually covered with ice and I am dragging a trailer up the Matterhorn(The new hill which sucks in the winter).

Careful on that road. The forest ranger up there is an a$$. He wrote me a ticket for doing 5 mph over in my STI. Then lectured me about racing up and down the road when I actually wasn't. Just saying be careful.

This is one of the best roads east of the mountains. Takes a little less than 2 hrs from Bellevue. You have got to do this once in your lifetime.

Thank you all for the suggestions. Too bad the weather is now the rainy season. Can't wait to go for a drive.

It's about 1.5 hours to the beginning of the run, but the Yakima Canyon Road from Ellensburg to Yakima is absolutely amazing. Over 17 miles of limited access 2 lane. Only a few driveways. Tight turns, straights, and long, amazing sweepers in a varied mix. Very little traffic, and spectacular views in places. Its wonderful drive along the Yakima river and I do it several times a summer.

A combination of Deception Pass and Chuckanut can be fun.

Chinook Pass area can be fun, but as others mentioned, Rangers are being extra tight up there. I came back over Chinook last weekend and got pulled over for no front plate. Luckily I just bought the M3 and used that as my excuse, so no ticket was given.

Hwy 101 up around the peninsula through Port Angeles can be a lot of fun.
