Not sure what this left lane hog was but had to deal with it for several miles in southern WA Saturday AM on my way back from LA with a used SLK55. Kinda wished my fog lights would have folded down and exposed dual 50 cals.

As I ran into a 58er in the fast lane last night driving a black scion coming south in I-5 in North Seattle, I began to wonder if I had the same understanding as others did about what the fast lane is for (Yes, this called for deep contemplation). The news posting helps, but the speed limit may be 60, so is the fast lane to move @ speeds >65? Rumors say many things about .... 8-10 mph over your may be alright. A part of me wishes that the limit was strictly enforced so there was no grey area of speeds that you can travel at.... would this mitigate slow drivers? I don’t know.

What I do know is that 60 is too slow for me. 70 is perfect and it always feels great to get to those higher speeds when permitted in other states or on the track. I also love cruise control and when someone is going to slow and interrupts my cruise I get frustrated. I also want to include this question, what is the polite way to tell someone to move over? Last night I gave the 58er a mile or so to move over. No result so I gave a brief flash of the high beams... THEY TURNED ON THEIR HAZARD LIGHTS and slowed to a blistering 55. I did not pass. That is right, I did not pass. I am not one to merge and blast by in some relentless demonstration of anger. I gave them some time to settle down. I wanted to see where this was going.
It went nowhere. I ended up taking-90 east as they continued south. They did amount to a fluctuating 58-62 for about 2 miles afterwards... What to do?

It doesn't matter whether you're going 50,60,70,80,180, etc. If you're not passing, you shouldn't be in the passing lane it's not the "fast lane", that's the law plain and simple, there are no rumors.

In WA it is legal to pass on the right.

I've found out that people are more likely to move over if I put on my left blinker for a couple of clicks, this works well on 520, of course on 405 it doesn't so much since there's the carpool lane to the left.

Saw this thread and had a good laugh. Just had to post this and add that when I drive my mother in-laws Prius, I get weird looks as I'm passing everyone on the highways. Must not see that happen very often.

In Seattle (metropolitan large) flashing lights, gesturing or waving frantically at some listless, lollygagger that is minding their own business in the left lane is like trying to get Mayor McGinn to not hire friends and pay them 95k just for being in the right place/right time.

How dare you! They WILL hold their ground and mock you like you were the idiot when you pass/exit or whatever your do in thier royal presence.

It is illegal to obstruct the flow of traffic in the passing lane, even if the flow of traffic is traveling at over 60MPH. WA State Patrol would rather see the continuous flow of traffic than enforce the speed limit and allow lane cloggers to camp in the passing lane. In your case, the person driving at 58 and blocking your progress was in the wrong.

Try doing this in Germany where you need to watch a mile behind you for a flashing turn signal, only to get passed at 170 by a big AMG Mercedes or a Ruf Turbo.....
These people should be sentenced to spend an entire month on the Autobahn to learn proper manners..

+1 This is exactly why I would love to live in Germany. Their roads are amazing and you dont dare hit the left lane unless you are passing!
