03 Jaguar S-Type R- Problem

My buddy had an 03 Jaguar S-Type R. Around 93k miles on it, mostly highway miles as he used it for a commuter vehicle for work. Automatic transmission and was regularly maintained. Anyways, the engine started making a knocking sound when he aggressively pulled out of his driveway a couple weeks ago and has not driven the vehicle since. His mechanic said he needed a new engine, but immediately made an offer on the car for $3900. Without consulting me he sold the vehicle and im trying to convince him he made a bad decision in doing that. Seems odd that the mechanic, knowing the cost of a new engine and the value of the car, immediately made an offer on the vehicle. What do you guys think? My buddy doesnt care too much about the car anyways but if there was lost money there then id like to point it out to him, for the future at least.

Hmmmm... devaluing something, with the effect of reducing the perceived value to the seller even futher, then purchasing on the reduced price?

I don't know either your buddy or this mechanic, but the words you displayed have negative implications all over them.
