Advice Please: Panamera Turbo, 2013 M6 or 2013 M5
I had the same dilemma, I was deciding between a used 2012 Panamera Turbo and the new M5. I went with the Panamera for the following reasons:
1. Styling -- the Panamera has a distinct look to it, it simply says something more than the M5. In fact, the M5 frankly looks like the other 5 series. At that price point, I wanted the "look" of 100k car. BMW simply falls short in this regard. A M5 or M6 blends into the crowd of "high-end" cars. My Panamera is routinely parked in front by the valet.
2. Performance -- I know the M5 is a horsepower beast, but the Panamera Turbo off the line with awd is no slouch. I see people comparing 1/4 mile times and horsepower number, the two cars are pretty similar in this respect -- they're both very fast. The "motor" edge goes to the BMW, but if your only argument for a car is, "I have the biggest most powerful motor", I don't know if that will continue to satisfy a person throughtout the ownership period.
3. Luxury -- the Panamera wins this hands down in my opinion. The interior of a Panamera with full leather is "luxury". BMWs are certainly nice, but there's "minimalist" feel to the interior. Again, I wanted the car's interior to look and feel like 100k, the BMW falls short. The Panamera is pure comfort -- for a car that moves like it does.
I say test drive both cars on the same day and see which one has the "wow" factor; see which car has the "man this is a nice car" factor that you will enjoy throughout ownership. It was the Panamera for me.
I forgot to mention that I didn't want an M5 because there was also a recall on the oil pumps...didn't want to buy a 100k problem!

Well put my friend
Today I test drove the M5 and Sat in the M6 and tested Panamera Turbo.
My thoughts:
M5
- The car was impressive but the lack of AWD causes it to be slow of the line. (Definite Pro for a Panamera Turbo)
- I felt substantial Turbo Lag, but once fully spooled it was impressive.
- Interior was quite nice
- very spacious
- really nice steering
- 3D and other bells and whistles are impressive
- Great value here in the UK with 0% finance
M6
- Stunning interior
- B&O sound system was impressive and I am a big audiophile.
- WTF no back seats at all
- The price difference between M5 and M6 makes no sense to me.
- a nice car but overpriced IMHO
- would likely push the button if priced the same as the M5
Panamera:
- nice interior
- faster of the line than the M5
- feels bigger than an M5
- will cost me more than a new M6 for a 3 year old car (when finance is factored in)
CONCLUSION:
I have to say none of the cars overly impressed me. Coming out of the luxury and performance of a custom tuned and lightly modded Contintal GT I am stuck (even though the car is getting pretty old).
Back to the drawing board I am afraid.
- I don't like the styling of the Audi 4 doors or RS5
- I enquired on the R8 V10 with Audi and it is being replaced with a new model in a few months. That killed it.
- I am going to check out a CL63 or maybe a CL65.
- I enquirerd on a few gen 2 997tt with PDK, but the pricing with finance works out at 85% more a month than a new M5.
Anyways that's where I am.
Thank you all for the help and any advice is much appreciated.

I checked out the CL AMGs and found out they are no longer available in the UK new as they are making way for the S Class Coupe. On paper the CL65 is far less powerful than the old CL65
Overall the drive/handling i felt was much better in the newer model as well (2007-2012).

A few panny owners are in new S8s now from the forums. It may not handle as well as the porsche, but feedback is hat its the better car overall in their view.
For me, I just went S8 for the fit and finish.

I have 2012 PTT, went from 2006 M5. I have daily driven an M5 since 1988 (1988, 1993, 2000, 2003 then 2006). I have no regrets with the change. I drove the new M5 and was not feeling it. I like the extra room in the PTT, especially the rear leg room.
I think the S7 and S8 are cars that have to be considered, both super nice cars, just not as sporty. The RS7 will be a bad **** and a car I would definately consider next time I make a change versus the revised PTT.
The M5 has lost some of its appeal and the back seat and trunk have very little room. As my kids get older, I need more space for them and don't want to drive an SUV dialy. As such the PTT/GTS or RS7 seem to fit me best.
Coming from a Bently GT I don't see you getting to impressed with anything else. I have a good friend who also has a Bently GT and from a daily driver perspective he is no longer really considering any other car! His kids are grown and he only needs 2 door, and from a road trip perspective it is a great car. He has owned just about everything and has the budget to drive whatever he likes.
I went to the track as a guest of Bentley in 2011 and drove the Cont. Supersports at Calif. Speedway. I never considered a Bently until after that day. Since I believe it is one of the cars on the top of my list for daily driver when the kids are grown. I was very impressed what it could do as such a big car.
Can't go wrong with PTT!

The Bentley is unique in its style. Hard to compare, but I feel the M5 and M6 are to plain for you. The PTT should be your thing if you want a sportier car than the Bentley, but still luxurious. Don't worry about the performance. If you don't want a PTTS, powerkit the turbo. It will kill the M5 off the line and hang in there ever at higher speeds. If you don't care about plain looks, go drive the Audi S8. It has surprised everyone. If you are used to Bentleys you'll need the wonderful awd. AMGs are not for you. If none are ok, you are stuck with a Bentley. I have been recently looking at the CLS shooting brake awd s, but it felt a little plain after the PTT and the RS7 is fast, but I was shocked the RS model is no wider than the standard car, whereas the new RS6 is 6cm wider than the a6, even wider than the Panny. You need to decide 2 major things and it will help you to decide. Flashy or not flashy, awd or rwd. Good luck!
