Guys,
I am getting rid of my Bentley GT and am looking to change into a comfortable and luxurious daily driver with serious performance.
Performance off the line and up to 120mph is what matters the most.
Your thoughts on which is best and why would be much appreciated.
Thanks,
Farris

All great performers IMO. I once owned an '08 M6 convertible and loved it as a daily driver. Went through tires like crazy though and it's strictly a 2 passenger car. The M5 is basically the same car as the M6, except that it's a sedan. So, if you're seeking versatility between a sports car and an executive sedan, I would suggest either the PTT or the M5.
Audi RS7, RS6, and S8 should be considered (especially since unlike most of us, you can get all the RS models). All three are faster than the M6 or M5 and are the only sedans that are as fast off the line as the Panamera Turbo. AWD helps alot when you are talking about starts from a stop. Check out this thread for some comparison.

I also like the looks of the RS7 over all three you brought up.

The RS6 and RS7 have almost the same identical numbers as the S8. I would definitely choose the Panamera over the M5/M6. Just my two cents, as you can guess I might be a little biased.

Good points fellow Cincinnatian. The M5,M6,PTT,RS6,RS7, and S8 are all within a quarter of a second apart 0-60. At the end of the quarter mile they are still within that same gap and the difference in MPH is still around 5 MPH in favor of the BMW's. The best way to choose would be to go have some fun and test drive some cars. The downside to the Panamera is the price difference and the fact you are looking at a used car compared to a brand new one that performs almost identically. They all have their own positive points, without many negatives.

Honestly if you're coming from a Bentley and If you aren't that concerned about handling and are used to a large sedan and want the quickest in a straight line, I'd seriously consider the M5. Your PTT will get through the first 60 feet first, but after that the M5 will walk it easily and the M6 more so.
Off the line to the 1320, none of the M's will touch the PTT. All the M's are in the flat 12's or low 12's, the PTT does 11.7 on a bad day.
From a roll, dunno who might win, but I would give the panny the edge, as it is more aerodynamic and lower than the M's.
All I can say is drive them all, and do not expect a non biased opinion for the PTT...
I had the same dilemma, I was deciding between a used 2012 Panamera Turbo and the new M5. I went with the Panamera for the following reasons:
1. Styling -- the Panamera has a distinct look to it, it simply says something more than the M5. In fact, the M5 frankly looks like the other 5 series. At that price point, I wanted the "look" of 100k car. BMW simply falls short in this regard. A M5 or M6 blends into the crowd of "high-end" cars. My Panamera is routinely parked in front by the valet.
2. Performance -- I know the M5 is a horsepower beast, but the Panamera Turbo off the line with awd is no slouch. I see people comparing 1/4 mile times and horsepower number, the two cars are pretty similar in this respect -- they're both very fast. The "motor" edge goes to the BMW, but if your only argument for a car is, "I have the biggest most powerful motor", I don't know if that will continue to satisfy a person throughtout the ownership period.
3. Luxury -- the Panamera wins this hands down in my opinion. The interior of a Panamera with full leather is "luxury". BMWs are certainly nice, but there's "minimalist" feel to the interior. Again, I wanted the car's interior to look and feel like 100k, the BMW falls short. The Panamera is pure comfort -- for a car that moves like it does.
I say test drive both cars on the same day and see which one has the "wow" factor; see which car has the "man this is a nice car" factor that you will enjoy throughout ownership. It was the Panamera for me.
I forgot to mention that I didn't want an M5 because there was also a recall on the oil pumps...didn't want to buy a 100k problem!

Today I test drove the M5 and Sat in the M6 and tested Panamera Turbo.
My thoughts:
M5
- The car was impressive but the lack of AWD causes it to be slow of the line. (Definite Pro for a Panamera Turbo)
- I felt substantial Turbo Lag, but once fully spooled it was impressive.
- Interior was quite nice
- very spacious
- really nice steering
- 3D and other bells and whistles are impressive
- Great value here in the UK with 0% finance
M6
- Stunning interior
- B&O sound system was impressive and I am a big audiophile.
- WTF no back seats at all
- The price difference between M5 and M6 makes no sense to me.
- a nice car but overpriced IMHO
- would likely push the button if priced the same as the M5
Panamera:
- nice interior
- faster of the line than the M5
- feels bigger than an M5
- will cost me more than a new M6 for a 3 year old car (when finance is factored in)
CONCLUSION:
I have to say none of the cars overly impressed me. Coming out of the luxury and performance of a custom tuned and lightly modded Contintal GT I am stuck (even though the car is getting pretty old).
Back to the drawing board I am afraid.
- I don't like the styling of the Audi 4 doors or RS5
- I enquired on the R8 V10 with Audi and it is being replaced with a new model in a few months. That killed it.
- I am going to check out a CL63 or maybe a CL65.
- I enquirerd on a few gen 2 997tt with PDK, but the pricing with finance works out at 85% more a month than a new M5.
Anyways that's where I am.
Thank you all for the help and any advice is much appreciated.

Price and finance ultimately drove my decision, I was able to get the 2012 Panamera Turbo for such a good price that I was able to reconcile the fact that it was considerably more than a new M5...I truly lucked into a great deal. Someone purchased a nicely optioned 2012 PTT, put aftermarket wheels on it, drove it for 1,200 miles, and then returned it for a 911 Turbo. The dealer wanted it gone so I benefited from someone's indecision -- heavily discounted vehicle.
Good luck to you...

I had the same dilemma as user gaitherb. Had a 2008 Silverstone M6. Great daily driver, never had any issues with it, built like a tank. Add some mods, Vorsteiner diffuser and wing. Then I had a son
I was able to milk the M6 for about year until the backseats were no longer large enough for him and it was killing my back just putting him in the carseat. In my mind I only had 2 choices M5 or PTT. I didn't consider the CLS 63, styling is just too choppy.
M5 - fast, engine is a beast. Boring style, interior is not luxurious at all. My wife said it best, "Is that really an M5?" Interior is second rate to the new M6. I do appreciate the service maintenance costs built into the price.
Panamera Turbo - Fast, great interior, my son seemed to gravitate towards the car. I guess he wanted to break all the climate control buttons in the back. Picked up a loaded Carerra White 2011 PTT with 16K miles for the same price as a 2013 M5.
I've had it for 2 months, no regrets. It's fast and the AWD is pretty incredible.
Cheers,
