First Impression 2013 PGTS

My PGTS has about 630 miles on it. Overall the car is great. The engineering that goes into the driving experience is amazing. I like the look of the car especially when the suspension is on the lower settings.

The car really handles well (I have PDCC/PTV plus). The car just sticks to the road in any type of turn.

The PDK implemented on this car is impressive. I like the downshifting that happens automatically when you brake or decelerate. Another feature I like is the ability to manually shift while the car is in the automatic setting. I do this going into a turn, with the comfort that I do not have to upshift coming out of the turn with my tiny paddles or gearshift.

The suspension in sport mode setting is a good compromise between the comfort and sportiness both in handling and in looks. Passengers have been impressed with how smooth the car is (while in sport mode). One has had a 911 and currently has a 750i BMW and the other has a Cadillac CTS sedan and a Lexus.

The sound of the naturally aspirated V8 is incredible…really enhances the driving experience. The noise when accelerating or when the car is downshifting is great.

The paddles on the multifunction steering were a bit odd at first, but I have gotten used to them. (I do wish the paddles were inverted though - see gearshift comment below) I decided against the paddles because I wanted extra buttons on the wheel like I had in my Mercedes. I found the voice control button difficult to access, so I programmed the button on the steering wheel to activate it.

The manual shift on the gearshift is something I have not gotten used to. Like many other cars, you pull the gearshift down to downshift. I subscribe to the BMW approach where you push to downshift you pull to upshift. Over the years, I have driven cars that have this feature and I still cannot get use to it. As a result, I doubt I will ever use the gearshift to shift manually.

The voice control is decent, but could use some improvements. I use it to switch playlists on my ipod, call people, and to navigate to my stored location. What would be nice is the ability to go directly to a track or playlist and start playing it without having to use the touchscreen or an addition voice command. In other words, I wish they had implemented the voice controls for the ipod like they did with the phonebook and stored nav points.

The nav system is pretty good, thought some improvement can be made. I like the fact that you can easily call restaurants after looking them up. This may be standard in many new model cars, but this process was clunky in my 2008 Mercedes. The biggest improvement area in my mind is when you search for POIs by key word in the POI name. Instead, you need to type in the first few letters of the listing. For example, if you look for Doe Automotive . .you need to know that it is John Doe Automotive. Otherwise you cannot find it

The BOSE system is decent. This was the one feature that I was not sure about when I ordered my car. I listened to a Burmester and went back and forth in my mind about this option vs the cost. You definitely notice the difference in the two systems. Now, after living with the BOSE a few days,, I am happy to report that I can live with the sound quality. . .assuming I never get in another Panamera with a Burmester.

The rearview camera option is a must in my opinion. If you find yourself in a tight spot, the camera is a lifesaver.

The lane change assist is an added level of comfort, but it does not replace looking back before changing lanes. Personally I would get this feature.

The rear hatch control is a bit of an inconvenience. Specifically, you cannot close the rear hatch while sitting in the driver seat. I have had to tell people loading items how to close the trunk. Occasionally, when they press the button, I get a key not recognized warning and they have to repeat the process. The ability to close the trunk is something I do miss from my Mercedes.

The interior looks great. I have been very diligent in checking for stains, dirt marks in my cream colored leather interior and have resigned myself to the fact that I will need to stay on top of it. Just had an incident today with redish brown dye transferring onto my seat from my leather jacket. Massive stain. I have both Leatherique and Lumiere All-Natural Leather Cleaner on rush order. I will probably wander over to a detailer this week since my chems are not in yet. If anyone has suggestions on where to go in the Chicagoland area, it would be much appreciated.

In summary, the car rides great and looks great. There are a few “inconveniences” but its clear to me that the goodies far outweigh the improvement opportunities.

Great review. I had the lightest interior in my E60 M5 and I'll never do that again. Used Leatherique every week and ended up replacing the entire seat back (under warranty) and the armrest and console twice. The leather coloring on my belt wore into the seatback and just couldn't be removed after about 10,000 miles. I gave up. I'm sure the Panamera leather is much better, but you really have to keep on top of it. There are some 'protective coatings' that you can apply, but everyone says they are bad news. Good luck.

With changing lanes, if you set the passenger mirror correctly, it simply isn't a problem. If you can see the side of the car, it's not set right. One thing I do is to drive alongside a car in my 'blindspot' and set the mirror so I can see it. You certainly don't need any other system IMO.

I took my pgts to the track last weekend and I was passing many m3s. That simply explained it all.

CPA4s,

Yes, the LR4 is a beast in the winter! It cuts through snow like butter....my wife uses that most of the time. I recently acquired a used 2007 Tahoe for hauling stuff. I will probably use that car in the dead of winter, when there is a lot of snow on the road. Another guy I met at the dealer had bought a pgts this past fall. He had been using winter tires and he swears by them.

congrats, I have the same miles on my PTTS and totally agree with your comments

gotta admit have same miles you have and am sticking to the 2k mile breakin keeping the rpms below 4200 and varying it as much as possible

wont get the full experience till the 2000 mile mark!!

I got the tech Art paddle shifters (left down right up, black with red shift signs) to make the steering wheel the way it should be

enjoy!!

you have to read this good, but somewhat poorly drafted, article from Winnipeg - a land of winter. it also has a couple of killer shots of a GTS slogged in all the snow you might never want.

TK - you have to look at this & see your red pano in a way you otherwise are very unlikley to see first hand - Santa dropped some stuff on it!

Yes, I will have to see how the all seasons work to see if it make sense to do slog it out in the snow.

Btw, I have been eyeballing the tech art paddle shifter. Might upgrade in the future. They look nice. Was wondering if there is adequate room between the paddles and the control stalks on the steering wheel.

all seasons are use less all around - you need something that handles the cold temp as much as anything else

This is not quite true, it depends on how your seat is set and how tall you are (how low you have to put the seat). I have to have it in the lowest possible setting. With my settings and a child seat in the back, there is a huge blind spot I can do nothing about... trus me I have tried.

OP, thanks for the review, enjoy your car!
