Hardwire Radar Detector to Rear View Mirror?

Anyone hardwired their detector to the rear view mirror power source in their Panamera? I've seen plenty of posts for 997's, a couple for 991's and some for 1st Gen Cayenne's, but nothing so far for the Panny.... which is a different mirror assembly (now the same as the Cayenne 958 I think)...

If anyone has a walk-thru on removing the mirror plastics (and which wire is 'hot' to tie into) I'd appreciate.

Thanks, KB

Sorry, I can't answer your question directly, but my dealer said popping the mirror on and off is pretty easy. I did not see how they did it, so cannot help there. I did see a plug in wiring that allows you to take of the mirror and install a replacement mirror, so if you can get the mirror off, (i think) you can test the voltage without cutting the wires.

I instead chose to have my display inside my mirror.
Good luck.

Thanks - yes, seen the Radar Mirror option - but I have a mental block when it comes to replacing a brand new and perfectly functioning OEM mirror! I found a thread from a 2011 Cayenne driver that LOOKS like it's the same mirror set-up as the Panny - he says the big cover (nearest the driver) 'pops' off and you can tap into the wires without problem.... If I don't hear from anyone else I'll try it myself on Saturday...!

Just so you know, Radar-Mirror gave me a new OEM Panamera mirror. They only modified the glass coating to allow the display to be seen through the glass. I basically bought the display mirror, the dealer installed it and gave me the original mirror. I sent back the original mirror and got my deposit back. My dimming works perfectly and i am happy with my display.

I was a bit nervous about the whole thing because I never dealt with radar-mirror before, but my experience was a very good one.

My guess is that the cover does pop off like you describe. You might also swing by the dealer and have your sales rep confirm this with the service department for you.

Best of luck.

I have it hard wired with a add-on-fuse. the fuse box is on either ends of the dash. very easy to access and run the wire along the side of the front windshield to the RD. no cutting the wires or guessing about the tap voltage!

So pretty straightforward to hardwire to the mirror - main challenge is to identify the right harness and then open up the rubberized sheath enough to get to the wires. I installed the fairly new Escort 'Smartradar' over the weekend, which sits immediately behind the rear view mirror and cannot be seen from behind the car at all (and is well concealed from within too). Good thing with this device is that you don't have to have any display wired into it (it does come with a mini- display that can be attached to the mirror or put somewhere else with a cable extension, but it is not required to operate). It connects by Bluetooth to your iPhone (there is an Android version too, but they are not interchangeable). The iPhone then lets you control the radar detector settings and displays lots of different information both from the detector as well as directly from the Escort Live service. Also means you can use the app in a different car without the detector and still pick up live updates from the 'community' -warnings on radar, laser, traffic signal cameras and police activity.
To hardwire, pull off the black 'T-shaped' cover behind the mirror (just clips on and off), and identify the harness that contains the plain brown and plain blue wires (there is also a pink wire which you don't need). Blue is 'hot' and Brown is Ground. Once identified I CAREFULLY sliced back the sheath about 2 inches (cut align the length of the harness, not across!), cut the cables, stripped them back a little and rejoined in one end of a crimp barrel connector (available at any auto store), then crimped the supplied mirror cable into the other end of the connector. The black cover then clips back on hiding the cable - there is plenty of room under it for the connectors. Keep the ignition off whilst cutting and joining - the powered mirror comes on with the ignition, so the detector is powered on and off with it too. Once paired with the iPhone it auto-connects via the Bluetooth as soon as the ignition is turned on - and off with off. Audio alerts are built into the detector and you can turn the volume up and down with a small button on the side of the unit.
I'll try and post a couple of pictures next weekend.

difficulty finding the 911 thread identifying the wire bundle inside the mirror mount overhead. 4 wires, which ones to use, sure would appreciate some help.

I am hoping someone who has removed the plastic rear view mirror shroud (without breaking anything) can explain how to do it. I ended up purchasing this radar mount . . .

. . . and I need to connect the power cord to the 12v source inside the shroud.

Well the dealership mechanic warned me not to mess with the rear view mirror electronics. Said I would run the risk of screwing up the electrical system.
