P4s unbelievable handling. However need advise

Switched from an '12 Audi A6 to '10 P4s. Wasn't sure I was doing the right thing. For what I am willing to pay for a DD, the big question was should I get a new A6 or get a used p4s. Ended up with p4s and that's how I found this forum. Here are my findings after a couple of months of driving it.

1) Unbelievable handling. Just point the car and it knows what I want. Almost magic. No other car I have owned or driven does it the way the panny does it - evoking confidence.

2) Dual personality. Drive it in normal mode and feel that the 7th gear at 1K RPM has got this humming sound. Not every exciting. However kick it into sports mode and this is a beast. Takes on a different personality. So end up driving in Sports mode. Wonder if I am hurting it by leaving it in sports mode all the time.

3) 2nd gear confusion. Been reading these forums and am aware of the issues with 2nd gear. Very similar observation to others who feel that it lunges forward as if its busy thinking before it says ok, you can control me now. Is it doing a virus scan of the computers in the car . Surprised its touched with perfection in some areas yet it lacks smoothness in 2nd and 3rd gear. I am hoping someone has figured out a way to fix this issue or has a workaround.

4) Yes I have read about sucking engine oil. Had to read the manuals to confirm. Using Mobil 1. Have had to put 2 quarts of engine oil for 2K miles. Yesterday, after putting a quart in it and driving for over 20 minutes and 10 miles, its still not showing Oil Level. Says it needs more time or waiting for me to drive some more. Wonder if there is a way to reset some switch so that it can get me a quick read on the oil level. Hopefully it will show me the oil level tomorrow.

5) Thing I miss most after switching from the A6 is lane departure and backup camera. Sent an email to the company in FL that installs back up cameras. Haven't heard from them. However, was wondering if they can be installed in maryland. Would be perfect if I can get some oem based or third party lane departure warning system too.

Finally, I want to thank the contributors to this forum for educating me about the panny. Its quirky, its a beast and looks odd but it does put a smile on my face every time I need to go out. Even if I don't need to go out, I will find an excuse to go out.

Thank you for reading my post. Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Nick

You are not hurting it by leaving it in sport mode. The only thing you are hurting is your MPG.

The digital oil gauge is quite fickle, just give it time.

I had a 2010 Panamera Turbo and one of the reasons I got out of that and got into my 14' is for the backup camera, the blind spot monitor and PCM update.

Enjoy the Panamera! It really is an incredible machine. I gave it up for a while, and bought all the competitors around it and just recently came back to it. Nothing compares to the driving experience it gives!

Was wondering how to find out if the PCM I have is the latest and if not can it be updated on the '10 p4s?

Also was wondering how the 14 compares to the 10' model. Like it so much that I am thinking of possibly upgrading. Got me hooked on these machines.

The new PCM's have jukebox and display most of the artwork for the CD's and Ipod music you play.

To me, the 14' shift points are better on the PDK. I also love the 2 tone interiors the 14' offers and there is less tire noise coming into the cabin now. Overall, a much improved car even though on paper there seems to be little change.

Check out the pictures of it...

I also have a 2010 4S and I rarely drive it in auto mode but when I did I was not light on the gas pedal and after a while that hesitation was gone and it is to this day. Nav TV makes a back up camera kit that any decent shop can install (I'd use a high end car audio shop since you need to get behind the dash). Porsche's oil monitors have been a pain to use since the switched from a dip stick (I miss those days). Good luck with your car.

Thanks MrPrice. Agree with you on the "not light on the gas pedal". Notice the difference when I goose it relatively more, the car is smoother then. I did look into Nav TV and seems they do have the electronics. I will reach out to them again - have not been able to get a reply to my earlier requests from them.

Been observing a significant amount of vibration inside the cabin when its idling at 800RPM. Along with the vibration the cabin is not quiet. Am wondering if others have observed this too? Is this related to some misfiring or components like the MAF not clean or am I missing something? Getting the dealers mechanics to look at it on Monday. Feel very much in the dark about what could possibly be wrong with the auto.

i drive a p4s. It's good hearing so many compliments, especially its superior handling. I hope someone could elaborate actually how could I feel the superior handling... I have driven other cars say E class, X5, C class etc, I feel the most difference of my p4s from others is the speed, and the AWD on rainy days.. .apart from that, I honestly don't feel how special is the handling.. am I missing out something?

If you drive any car just on the highway and back and forth to work at a casual pace you will not feel the difference other than the way the car responds to your movement of he steering wheel. To really understand how this car handles (other than taking it to a track) you will need to take it on roads with tight curves sharp corners and push it. Some call it handling you might also say the car feels planted (though I get my tires to break and squeal when I drive like this), and if you have sportplus I'd suggest switching to that setting while doing this. If you do not enjoy driving like that (no insult meant) you will likely not experience some of the car handling capabilities.

no offence taken. but you are right. I really don't drive aggressively. the road conditions dont' really allow it in my routine commute.. even if there is chance, I guess I don't feel comfortable to say push the corners..

That's how I feel too. If I am cruising, its an ok drive. As a matter of fact there are more comfortable cars out there, I currently own or have owned. However, the p4s gives you a feeling that is hard to express especially when you are pushing it around corners: the car feels very "planted" and you can take sharper turns at a relatively faster speed without being unsure if you will slide or not. However, some of us do like to slide it and if you do, the slide is very controllable.
