Porsche Entry and drive - door handles

Hi,

I have the keyless entry and I want to understand how the door handles work, it seems if you just touch them (on the inside) the door unlocks (without pulling). I ask because my drivers doesn't always work and sometimes (rarely) none of them work, so just trying to understand the mechanism/voodoo

Thanks in advance

a less than stellar explanation https://www.yourmechanic.com/article...oor-locks-work
there are 2 components to it, the RF from your key-fob and the touch plate of the door, which I suspect is capacitive

my door unlocking works pretty well, the drivers side lock button on the other hand is getting flaky

So here’s what I know so far, the handles have sensors in them and the fix is to replace the handles themselves. I am hoping to talk to a Porsche tech tonight at a party so I will get confirmation.

Talked to Porsche and they are $203 (CDN) each - that’s with painting.

does yours work with other doors? Mine just stopped completely working after being spotty with the drivers but working with other doors. Is there a module that controls all of them or is it my key?

Talked to the tech tonight, he said if it’s just the drivers could be the battery, but the resistor in each handle fail often. Replacement is a ***** he said as the whole window assembly in the door needs to come out. About 2 hours labor, and he said I don’t want to do it myself-he knows I work on all my cars, but I trust him when he says don’t do it yourself.

Did a little more testing this afternoon. If I try to use open or lock the doors, the display says “key not recognized” when the key fobs works perfectly.

I tried the lock/lock with the actual key, ignition then unlock button but still says “key fob not recognized”

anyone have any ideas?

Battery in the fob?, there is also a special place to put the key near the steering wheel if it is not recognized. I forget where but I think it’s in the manual.

My advice would be to find someone with PIWIS or Icarscan or similar - basically something that will allow you to see which antenna is sensing the key. You can walk around the car and it will tell you the strength of the signal. Without that kind of detail you are shooting in the (expensive) dark.
Could be key (do they both do the same? If so, unlikely), could be handle, could be interior antennas. Could be door module, could be gateway, Could be something else.

Sounds like icarscan is a good bargain. But some reviews says it doesn't work. I guess it depends if you buy an original vs fake/clone. Do you mind sharing where you got yours? Hoping PIWIS arrives tonight but realized it says Monday the 22nd, which is next week.

I got mine from these guys - when it was on sale - and they shipped to the UK.
I have the older version (it’s orange and a little bit smaller than this one).
I got it a few years ago before I bought the Panamera - it was very useful for my cayenne (955) - lowered the suspension, enabled auto headlights, got to the bottom of Kessy issues and coded a few other things. It also worked on our VW golf & BMW Which seemed to never go wrong despite costing a fraction of the P cars...
Anyway, I was surprised that it works so well with the Panamera (2010). I’ve used it to recharge the suspension with Nitrogen, service the brakes and diagnose a bunch of other minor bits and pieces.
It is not PIWIS, and I am looking for an excuse to get a PIWIS II, but I’ve not found anything yet that it can’t do.

@Stringbag Thanks. I'm probably the first person to be saddened that I got a PIWIS instead of the icarscan...

On the positive side it seems it's actually here in Los Angeles as of this morning. DHL tracking confused me yesterday. Item 5 was actually dated the 14th, while prior number item dated the 15th. Somehow it seemed processed through customs even before it left HK.

Does this need a specific tablet/laptop?
