Need More Reversing Light! Servicing Rear Tail Light?
I need more light while reversing. I got inspired to remove my rear tail lights and do a bulb swap as others have done on this forum. I was hoping to put in new LED bulb assemblies to replace the stock incandescents. Unlike others who have found the bulbs accessible via a removable cover, I found my tail light assemblies to be sealed. WTF??
The sealed units have torx screws all around the back of the tail lights. Has anyone tried to open up a tail light assembly? Do they open with these torx screws? Are the rear reversing tail light bulb assemblies accessible if/when the unit is opened up?
I have a 2014 4S. I'm attaching a pic of the part number from my driver's side tail light. I've also found the exploded parts view of this tail light assembly and it looks like there should be cover (#7 in pic below) to access the rear light bulb assemblies (#5 in the pic)?? Obviously NOT the case with my car....
Would appreciate thoughts, especially if you're managed to navigate this problem. Thanks!
My assembly is exactly like yours, in that the bulb cover is not removable. I came to the conclusion that if I wanted to replace it, I would have to order parts #7 & 8 (x2) and cut out the existing piece blocking the bulb access and then install the gasket and cover. I don't see why it can't be done, but I understand most aren't willing to risk damaging the taillight by taking a dremel to it. Short of that you would have to buy all new lights that come with the removable cover which will be far more expensive...obviously.
I'm currently sorting out the air suspension, so once that's done I have a small project for the front amber bumper lights that I'm going to tackle, so I may give the taillight "mod" a try.
Thanks elShiz! This is kind of what I figured based on reading other forum posts. I’m not sure if I want to cut the tail light assembly! I just finished with my air suspension (was my compressor & relay). Good luck and let us know if you end up doing the taillight rear reversing light mod!
