Coolant Leak Testing, Pressure Type.

Got my pressure tester yesterday from Amazon. I tried the proper adapter and can not seem to get a good seal, or something is wrong. We’re losing some ounces of coolant each time driven. As I’m trying to build pressure I notice as I reach 8 PSI the bleeder valve plunger will start to rise up. Is this normal, or has our bleeder valve failed? Is this the/one source of coolant loss? Seems unusually low pressure for the plunger to rise, but what do I know?....

Thanks for any advice you may have.

Found this post on how the bleeder valve works:

Seems ours is normal. (Wishful thinking it'd be so simple)...

To be honest I'm not the brightest when it comes naming parts, but it's the front V or Y shaped cover. We bought the car last early July with unknown history, so I honestly don't know. Since it looks like it's started leaking I guess I shouldn't even try just replacing the bolt? (I have 26 of them slated for the upper cam covers I believe you refer to). This is annoyingly the magnesium covers as I understand so if I take it apart I have another bunch of one time bolts to replace, besides what looks like 3 seals.

Why are you taking it all apart anyway? Seems like a lot of work!

This guy does some amazing videos.
Not sure if it’s the same engine (yours is a ‘13 gts? If so it’s very similar) but it might be helpful to watch him take it apart.
He has others too - worth searching through the others he has made.
Good luck.

Someone on this forum advised me to buy all these parts and fluids to make the car run like new for another 60k miles. Said he'd help but kind of disappeared after I ordered all the stuff. So now I'm trying to do some of the repairs on my own. I was advised a "y" shaped coolant tube under the intake manifold was the source of the leak, so I opened it up. Still can't tell where exactly the coolant is disappearing to as I add pressure. It is holding pressure longer now...

Thanks Stringbag for the video link/direction! My hands have recovered from all the nicks I suffered from so I'm not so grumpy anymore. I'll relax a little and watch some for now....

Ok, well above my knowledge level. I do know there is a thermostat housing beneath the intake manifold that is glued in in prone to leaking but that is probably different - I don’t know if a turbo and a gts are the same.
More info including a good video in this thread -

Thanks.

That part that basically exploded on that member is right above my two fingers in the picture. It looks like the housing is underneath some fuel distribution lines which I do not know how to deal with. It also seems to have another glued in line running all the way to the firewall. (Meaning big headache). I already have all these parts that I'm not sure I'll be able to install, so I didn't order that thermostat housing.

I checked the instructions I compiled and I only know the tightening spec of that one screw that is missing, not the tightening order for the panel. I may not have the tamper proof torx bit.

I basically got yelled at for creating a mess in the den with all the parts from the car scattered around. Sigh....

Sounds familiar!
I haven’t looked but these guides may have the torque values. They do for most things.

Thanks again. So I found out where that one bolt went. It was holding a bracket. So I was the one who took it out. I think I better wait until I'm more awake when work on the car. Sorry about the false alarm!

Did you ever find the problem? I replaced the y vent pipe under the manifold but same thing lose a couple ounces and it stops. I can't get to the magical 194 number for my coolant. Before it was leaking I was at 212, after I'm at 201.Rented a pressure testers to see.

Still Losing Coolant.

Nope, sadly I have not seemed to stem the loss of coolant any. I can say it seemed to start right after I drove around with a bad Air Oil Separator aka PCV valve? (Not sure exactly the best terminology to name it hence the question mark). Still have what is left of two small K-Seal bottles in there (16 oz total, which I added piecemeal). No loss on the pressure tester device even left overnight with pressure. I also replaced the "y" shaped coolant pipe underneath the intake manifold and no improvement. Still suspecting the coolant is escaping from the cap somehow, or some pathway not open when the engine is cool....

BTW-. 201 F is the norm for my coolant temp. It's very consistent. Oil temps vary some from 213 F to 221 F hovering around 217 F a majority of the time. Were you referring to coolant temp?
