NYC -- Run For Wounded Veterans
NYC -- Run For Wounded Veterans
Hey All,
I am organizing a run to raise money for wounded veterans on December 10th. I'd love to get some of local P-car guys to come out (and bring their checkbooks), I've done a few of these in past and this year should be a blast. Here are the specifics:
**** DETAILS ****
When: Sunday December 10th 2006, 8 AM
Raindate: Sunday December 17th 2006
Where are we meeting: Grant's Tomb in Manhattan, NYC. Located on 122nd Street and Riverside Drive.
Where are we going: We will be driving south on Broadway to Times Square, where a rep from the charity will be meeting us to accept all our donations. From there we will cross over to Jersey via the Lincoln Tunnel to a dinner right on the other side. As in previous runs, the police will not be a problem.
Why are We Doing This:Last year for the Hurricane Katrina Fund Run we raised almost $4,000! This year I would like to beat that figure for an equally good cause: returning Veterans. With that I would be hoping to get at least 50-60 cars coming.
Suggested Donations:$50-$75 bring a check made out to the organization (to be named shortly) on the day of the run. Corporate donations are accepted, PM me for details.
Charity: Info forthcoming
Hope some of you will make it out. I know there are *tons* of pcars around the tri-state area, so why not help out a good cause?

Ok ladies and gents, here's the charity:
http://www.fallenheroesfund.org/fallenheroes/index.php
100% of all donations will go to the center, as the Board of Trustees underwrites all administrative etc costs. I checked out charities pretty thoroughly and feel very comfortable with this one (you can view the breakdown of the fund here: http://www.charitynavigator.org/inde...orgid/3906.htm). It looks like a representative will be on hand to collect donations, so I really hope we get a great attendance!
here is the write-up provided to me by the group:
ABOUT THE FUND
The Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund is constructing a world-class state-of-the-art advanced training skills facility at BrookeArmyMedicalCenter in San Antonio, Texas. The center will serve military personnel who have been catastrophically disabled in operations in Iraq and Afghanistan. The center will also serve military personnel and veterans severely injured in other operations and in the normal performance of their duties, combat and non-combat related.
The center will encompass a 60,000 square foot structure, providing ample space and facilities for the rehabilitation needs of the patients and their caregivers. It will be constructed on a site sufficient in size to meet the needs of the center’s patients and caregivers and will include $35 million in top of the line indoor and outdoor facilities.
As of April 17, 2006, The Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund has successfully reached its goal of $35 Million dollars for constructing a world-class state-of-the-art advanced training skills facility at BrookeArmyMedicalCenter in San Antonio, Texas.
Although sufficient funding has been received for the construction costs, the Fund is accepting donations to provide additional services to the patients who will be treated in the Center and their families. These services may include facilities for patients' children, additional medical equipment and supplies, medical research to improve the care of patients, or other areas relating to the Center's activities including the patients and their families. One hundred percent of the contributions will continue to go to these services, with nothing taken out for the Fund's administrative costs. We thank you for continuing to support our efforts.
OVERVIEW
To date over 18,000 men and women have been wounded in operations in Afghanistan and Iraq. Some are treated in the field and returned to duty, others require more extensive care in an in-theater medical facility, but eventually return to duty. More severely injured personnel are transferred to military hospitals in the U.S. Some of these troops are ultimately returned to duty. But some suffer injuries so severe that they require extensive medical care, years of treatment and rehabilitation, and they are medically discharged from the armed forces. Their future quality of life, their ability to care for themselves and provide for their families, and their very survival depends on the treatment, rehabilitation and advanced training skills they receive following their injury.
Many of the most severely injured military personnel, from all branches of the Armed Forces, are treated at BrookeArmyMedicalCenter in San Antonio, Texas. The most severely injured suffer from double and triple amputations, severe head and body trauma, blindness, deafness, and partial and full paralysis. The use of improvised explosive devices in Iraq has resulted in many cases of severe burns. The care and rehabilitation of these men and women who have sacrificed so much for our nation demands that they be given the care they need and deserve.

This Facility will serve not only those injured in Iraq and Afghanistan, but also veterans injured in prior conflicts and service members critically injured in non-combat operations. The center will be built in conjunction with and attached directly to two 21-room Fisher Houses. Click here for more information on Fisher Houses.
This Facility will be presented by the Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund to all five military branches and to the Department of Veterans Affairs.

I'm in, schedule permitting, which at present it appears to be.
Bringing the rally car if it snows, friend w/ GT2 otherwise.
Edit: Might not be able to attend, due to work.
I'll try and wiggle out of it, as I'd love to go.

Nabbs,
Great Job posting this here...... As a Disabled Veteran who was put in this same position I can tell you that this really touches home. I only wish I could attend. I know I wasn't his as hard as others but I can only hope this event helps those who really have needs.
Good Luck with this event!
