I am in process of replacing the pcm after the display went blank. Radio still works but cannot see anything, slowly dimmed after battery replaced. Instead of fussing with the pcm, will update with pioneer avic 8201.
Do you move the hvac control up one notch where the navi disc used to be?
Is there a tray that fits into the opening that the navi disc vacated; prefer one with a door lid so the blank tray is hidden when not in use; good place to install the android connector.
I made a little panel to put switches on. I have added the laser jammer control since this pick but you can buy a CD caddy and I've seen just a empty storage box also.
That panel looks great Slider!! I have the storage bin; here's what it looks like if you haven't seen it OP... Youll notice that I drilled a hole in the back of the bin and put a lightning connection in there because my App Radio 4 has car play. I'm waiting for wireless CarPlay to become a reality at which point I'll buy a new head unit and get a virgin bin... you can see your options at the Suncoast Porsche website.
You can also buy the various pieces done in C/F which look good. My setup has the A/C where Stebo's cubby is and a flat panel below with a gauge and switches.
I mounted the stock cup holders. I like it, but it was a royal PITA. The lower opening is smaller than the upper opening, so you have to cut the face plate smaller and make a custom bracket to hold the two cup holder cartridges.
For anyone in a similar situation looking for ideas, I went a different direction: I replaced the PCM with a single-DIN unit, relocated the climate controls up top (like a normal non-PCM car), and deleted the lower console with the factory GT3 console piece. The extra knee room from deleting the lower console is priceless.
Definitely not optimal, but better then nothing. The head unit is usually not an issue, because there are rarely two drinks in the cup holders. The climate control is also no issue, because I set a temperature and never touch it.
The bigger annoyances are that they are still tilted toward the head unit and it's a little close to the hand when shifting. The worst thing is the installation is a PITA. Trust me when I say you have to completely fabricate the bracket that is holding the drink holder cartridges. Also, the back of the cartridges have to be tilted up as far as possible to help reduce the angle when they open.
I struggled to find the best place for a cup holder in our cars and settled with this. It's out of the way and does not interfere with anything, but I'm always looking to see if anyone comes up with a better place.
Steve, it looks well executed, but I'd be very wary of liquid in paper cups that close to $$$...
I never considered the original cup holders to be anything but silly either.
