Missing 996 Turbo Bumper brace support
Missing 996 Turbo Bumper brace support
I have a 2001 996 Turbo. I went to see if I could put a Tow hook in the front bumper for a licence plate, and there is NOTHING to screw it into. IT looks like the removed the front bumper under the bumper cover. Does this use the same bumper support as all 911 and 986's ? I would like to replace it. I wanted to pull the bumper off to clean radiators and repaint the "black" anyway.

You better remove the bumper cover to see exactly what is missing. If you are missing the bumper reinforcement (#18) may be you are also missing the bumper absorbers (#20) and also the hardware....The bumper reinforcement seems to be installed on all 911 1998 to 2005 and turbo and GT2 2001 to 2005.

Someone removed it to save weight in all likelihood as the brace weighs about 25lbs if I recall. Was this a track car? If the front one is missing, I wouldn't be surprised if the rear one is missing also. The rear one is more commonly removed as it helps with the balance of the car.
Are you looking for part#20? I was thinking about getting the light weight ones so I'd be willing to part with them at 50% of the price.
I might even part with part#18 if I can find a light weight one.

I was not aware there are any lightweight shock absorbers (part #20). Are you sure? I have the stock ones in the garage and they only weight about 2 lbs each. I think the 996 Euro cars may have had a lighter crash brace (I know they do on the 997) but I don't have a part number. Post it up if you find it please.

that's awesome.. Like realoem for the bmws. Where is the online parts catalog that you pulled this from? That could be very helpful!

I also have heard of these types of absorbers being referred to as 5mph bumpers. Is that all they are good for? Up to ~5 mph or do they cancel out roughly 5mph of impact out of the equation? Like if you hit something at 60mph with them on, it would be like hitting something at 55 without them? Curious...

Yes, they will absorb some shock and should be good for a 5mph hit. It's like a short crumple zone or shock absorber. Honestly if I found out my car had crash bars removed and I wasn't told I'd be livid... I'll have my 'glass bumper off soon and really hope I don't find similar shenanigans :-O
