Extra storage in spare wheel well

After having a flat tire I noticed how much space the spare tire used. I also noticed that the factory jack would not work out well off road .

I normally carry my jumper cables, tire repair kit flares, triangles, recovery gear, tools etc in a aluminum box 22.83" x 15.12" x 9.45"

The solution was simple. I flipped the spare tire over , bought a shorter bolt to secure the wheel and everything that was in the box is now under rear deck.

Now I have that much more room for when I go camping.

That will work with the base radio - no subwoofer. If you have the Bose or Burmeiser - that space is NLA..

Yup, not a choice if there's a Bose or Burmeister option. That space has a big subwoofer mounted in it.

That and if you want to store safety triangles the cubby inside the liftgate will hold two of them (at least on my 2017 GTS). VW part# 1Y0093055 fits perfectly. I ordered mine from Fowler VW, as they had the best price at the time.

Great use of space! And I like the better jack. Wish I could do that.

Unfortunately that same space on my ride is full of electrons most of the time.

Thanks to a fellow Texan for a brilliant idea...I just clumsily put my jumpers underneath the wheel in that space and figured, since it's my wife's DD, "how is she gonna get those out quickly?" Short answer, "She ain't!" Now that I can turn it over, problem solved...I appreciate it greatly, mep!

storage

Anytime. I'll eliminate the spare as I have two full sized spares so I'll have even more space. One is on a hitch mounted swingout and the other will go on the roof rack.
Just trying to figure out my drawer and fridge slider to still give me access to the wheel well.

Just a follow-up question: did you just really tighten down the stock clamp with the new screw? It seems to really fit with the wheel spoke contours one way; when the clamp is set against the inside of the wheel, the fit rather loose unless the screw is tightened quite a bit.

Thanks,!

Hah...nice work with Photoshop, then!

For anybody who may be considering this, I've got to say it's pretty straightforward; just order the new screws (Hillman 880684) from your local Lowe's, flip the spare over and insert the new screw. Since you'll have one screw left over, give it to a fellow Cayenne owner; he or she might appreciate it!

As I was trying to allude to in previous posts, the clamp doesn't exactly fit the interior contours of the wheel, but it'll hold it if you tighten said screw well enough as the spare feels just as secure as it did right side up. As the OP's excellent shots show, there is now plenty of room for all sorts of stuff. It's quite an effortless mod and I'm glad to learn of it.

Very cool post, thanks for sharing. Is the 1.5 jack strong enough to lift our porky Cayenne's? I use a 3.5 ton.
