I had a beautiful 996 with only ~46k miles (75k km) on it, when I experienced a cracked cylinder in the block. I immediately shut the car off, and had it towed to a shop. I then received the bad news after having the cylinder scoped.
The mechanic (whom I completely trust) made a ballpark estimate of 18-25k CAD to get a new shortblock installed - depending on what else needs to be done as well. Several shops around town have stated that this is reasonable.
I've been offered a small amount for the car - as is - from the shop.
Are there any other options? Is there a market for "donor" cars? The thing was beautiful , and I can't help but feel like there might be a better solution.
I am worried about that for my 01 with 44k miles, not worth putting money into a new motor and not worth anything without a motor. The only real option is to find a wrecked car with a good motor and do a transplant. That is what I would do as my dad gave me this car he bought new when he was no longer able to drive and I will keep it just for that.
you can get a used engine for a few grand, its a fairly simple swap. Its just not worth tearing into one of these engines anymore... plus you could part out pieces from the old engine, make a little $$$ back.
I would consider an LS conversion (or other conversion options) at some point. I am buying a new to me 99 model that recently had the IMS done, but if that motor dies, I”ll sort it then. If you love the car, think outside of the box for options.
