Strange clutch issue
Hello friends,
I experienced a strange problem with my 2002 996TT 6-speed with 62,000 miles. After a 20 min freeway drive, I pulled over at the gas station to meet up with friends. Upon leaving, the car turned off and noted ‘internal malfunction’ on the dash display. I then pushed in the clutch (which seemed firm), started the car and pulled forward. It turned off again. At that point I tried to push in the clutch but it was so firm I could not even push it down at all. Likely only depressing about 20% of the throw. I could not start the car (likely because the clutch could not be pressed in). From there I had the car towed home. The next day I got in the car and the clutch pedal was to the floor. I grabbed it and pulled it up, at which point it was back to where it was the previous day where I could not press in the clutch.
Does anyone have any ideas of what this could be? Any and all comments would be appreciated.
Thank you,
Aaron

I do believe your clutch master cylinder has catastrophically failed. There is *usually* some warning via uneven clutch and/or pedal action. But if it went to the floor? Then it has lost all hydraulic pressure which involves the slave ( and in concert accumulator ) but what you describe sounds like the master. Take a look at the fluid level at the master in the trunk just below the washer fluid reservoir. If it's low/empty or whatever. That's your culprit.
The fact you were unable to start the car is probably the best example as to why so many long term owners disable the clutch switch under the pedals allowing the car to be started in neutral. Good luck.
Yes, shame about this forum.
