$56k is about what they sell for at auction. Are 996tt's over 40k prone to SERIOUS mechanical trouble? The second hand market fears them.

As for the mileage from my research the 996 Turbo is the most reliable of the 911 turbos. So far I have not had any issues and before I bought the car I had the local Porsche dealer inspect the car. The main thing I was told to look out for on a high mileage 996 turbo was the issue with the cars poping out of 2nd gear.....Other then that there great cars.....Jay.S

edit: To the OP.... 996TTs over 40k aren't prone to serious issues it's just that if something serious breaks it's seriously expensive to fix and that's a risk that most people don't want to take when they can get a lower mileage car for mid 60s and where there is a much larger selection of cars.

edit: On a note to the OP. 996TTs are pretty reliable but consider the following... 1) If something serious fails, it could cost you a small fortune to fix. Can you afford that? 2) Would your money be better spend on a newer low mileage warrentied 996 C2/4/4S?
I personally think that the best deals on 996TTs are the cars between 65-70 with 10-20k miles. They're out there. Save up for a little longer and the market will meet you half way.

my close friend has 160k on his 03 996tt x50. He drives it every day all year round, and tracks it every chance he gets. He is still running the original clutch, which is getting replaced next week finally. and other than normal maintenace and a bad CV joint he has not had a single issue with it. He lives in RI and commutes to northern MA daily...

Is that 160,000 kilometers or miles? Either would be great but 160,000 MILES would be incredible. My 2001 TT which is owned by my best friend has 40,000 miles and is doing great despite having 6,000 track miles on it.
