Google "search the web"

Just noticed this.

Seems annoying and pointless because alot (most) people would already have this bar in their browser anyway.

I for sure no OSX users have it in their Safari. Same with Firefox and IE?

It seems like Google is taking over!

If you don't need/like it, then don't use it.. i guess

it's not taking up any additional site space (that area was empty)

Why do you think Safari/FireFox/IE have the Google Search box in their browser? If you guessed added revenue, you'd be correct.. every time you do a search through your browser and click on a "sponsored link" Google gives a penny or two to the browser company.

Wouldn't you rather give that penny to 6Speed?

well, now you have that choice.

I'm all for the site making more money, but you guys are laying it on pretty thick with all the new Google ads and such. It just doesn't look right, it looks like the sole purpose of the site is to generate money now.

I don't agree.. aside from adding Google Adsense and a number of additional user features (photo gallery, new forums, etc) nothing else has changed... so how could the purpose of this site change. The users and the content still remains.

If you look at any worthwhile free media outlet, all of them are subsidized with advertising, whether it be Google Ads or there own ad systems, they're all funded through ad revenue.

and unless the ads are pop-ups, spyware, or overtly obtrusive I can't see having an issue with them, after all it costs me nothing to use the site and ignore the ads if need be.

This reminds of a time a few years ago there was homeless man that stood on the corner of Randolph & Wells in Chicago begging for change... I don't give money to beggars, but occasionally I will by them something to eat..

So one day on the way to the office, I stop in the Dunkin Donuts and get him a couple of donuts and a coffee... he thanks me kindly... and I head into the office. I did this of and on for couple of weeks

And one day as I'm approaching him, he starts telling me the donuts were kind of stale, and that the next time he wants hot chocolate instead of coffee and make the donuts buttermilk.

I never spoke to him after that.
