Boxes for wheels

Merry xmas all! I need to ship my stock 997 wheels back to the east coast. If anyone happens to have any wheel boxes laying around please let me know. Boxes must be able to accommodate wheels with tires mounted. Thanks in advance! 24O-342-6288

Forgot to mention, i'm in OC

Just put cardboard over the rim area and use packing tape around the wheel to hold it in place. The rubber from the tire will protect it. I ship wheels like that all the time.

That's a brilliant idea and i never knew the shipping companies would accept that. In my case some of wheels are missing valve stems and the deflated tires are loosely hanging on the wheel.

What shipping company do you typically use?

When I shipped my 22" rims with tires, I did exactly that and cut up some cardboard boxes and two-plied it on the front side and 1-ply on the back to protect the rim. Taped the crap out of it and then rolled all 4 rims/tires to the local FedEx office inside the Kinko's.

The guy behind the counter said they do it quite often and it is handled just like anything else.

Can you get some cheap valve stems (4 for $3) from Pepboys and then inflate the tires up to seal it or is the bead loose? If the bead is loose, then you would have to use heavy duty tape and make sure the cardboard and tires are held together.

Called but just missed you. I may need the stuff overnighted since I'm in town only for a few days. Or feel free to give me a buzz whenever you're in the office 24o-342-6288. Appreciate the help!

This is how Tire Rack ships wheel and tire packages too. I save the cardboard rounds they send me (I've bought FAR too many wheel and tire packages from them!!!) to reuse whenever I need to sell a set of wheels. You should usually plan on 3 layers of cardboard on the outside face of the rim and 2 layers on the inside, and you should have tape going in 8 places over the tire (i.e. tape every 45 degrees around the entire wheel and tire). You should have 2-3 layers of tape every 90 degrees and 1-2 layers every other spot.

One thing to be aware of is you're typically looking at about $50-70 per wheel and tire combo to ship each one due to the weight and size. Companies like Tire Rack have negotiated rates that are about 1/3 or 1/4 of what the usual consumer like you or me pay. Because of this, I'd recommend looking into a freight shipping company rather than using UPS, Fedex, or one of the major service companies. A freight company will typically charge $150 to ship a set of 4 wheels and tires, though in general they're going to want them either all tied together or on a pallet so they don't have 4 separate items to handle.

Thanks all for the input. The shipping company moving my car back to MD is taking my wheels too for an additional $100. I think it just makes more sense to take this route.
