looking for a track car
my TT is for sale and its quite the accomplished club racer...has pca track records at LRP. It also has around 8k in spares plus all stock stuff. Its not as inexpensive as others, but its an amazing value for a winning club racecar.

I want to sell my 993 to buy a 996 Cup Car or a 996 TT to race Drew.

I'd do a Caterham or a Radical. The Panoz is great if you're near Road Atlanta or in the South where there's a following for them, but I've never seen one north of the Mason-Dixon line. Or get an Ariel Atom. All much cheaper than trying to run a 996 Cup Car or whatever you're thinking in the Porsche family. If you're looking for speed for the money as far as track cars, Porsche should be pretty much at the bottom of your list. I say this as a GT3 owner... the GT3 is a quick street car and a slow race car.
Though I have a prejudice against those big four-cylinders. Three liters spread across four cylinders is asking a lot of a balance shaft at high RPM's...

The 951 is a 944 turbo! A big 4 cylinder. 944s have anywhere from 2.5 liters to 3.0 liters, while the 944 turbo was always a 2.5 liter.
Okay, I'll bite. Why ?
I think the original poster was looking for a fun weekend car that he would take to a few trackdays a year. Note he mentions that he is thinking about a boxster.
I always that the Cayman S was a good fit for that. Obviously not the same as a Radical, Panoz, Ariel Atom, Race spec 911 TT's..etc but I don't think that is what the OP is looking for.
I am actually having the same thoughts myself, i.e. something fun for the weekend, still fun on the track, maybe tweak a few things here (ECU flash, suspension, exhaust) and there but still be able to drive the car around town..etc.
I think the Lotus is a pretty good car for that, but not an option for tall people.

Reasons being:
1) Cost of converting the car to more track duty.
2) Certain things that I do not want in a track car that are difficult to change: sunroof, AWD
3) Fear of pushing the limits because I don't want to wreck a $138,000 car (less fearful for a car under $50K)
I know the E36 is great because it's light weight, but I love the E46, I was wondering if its worth going through the pain of converting an E46 to a dedicated track car, or if Im better off going the E36 route.
