I would get a lotus elise. Perfect lightweight (1,900lbs)track car and only $35,000. Also, the Toyota drivetrain is very reliable. You can also tune it with a turbo or supercharger when you need more power later on.
Used Spec Miatas are nice as are Honda Challenge cars. You can find either one for a good price with cage, spares and well sorted sometimes with a trailer thrown in!
If you do not plan to race it you can do even better as both chassis are often under weight and you have to add ballast to get to racing weight. You can add a little power, a little more brake and go out and have a car that will cut seriously low times for peanuts.

Looks like you can buy one for around $80,000, which is not bad for a Ferrari race car... does anyone own one?

My dad just picked up a Panoz GT-WC from wirewheel.com and loves it. I haven't been out in it yet though, but he's got 2 or 3 other people in Houston to place orders with wire wheel. Tube Chassis, V8 for $23,900. Can't beat it for fun value.

not worth it i think!
I do a fair amount of track days (6-10 annually) and have decided on a dedicated track car, a Radical SR3. After doing events with my Lotus Esprit its apparent the track days are pretty rough on a street car.
