WTB: Dedicated Track Car

I am on the prowl for a track car. It must be road legal, must be able to drive to the event, and drive back. Reliability is a major key. I don't really care about the interior, most likely it will be gutted for weight savings. I really want to tune/track prep it myself, get "dirty," so unmodified cars. Preferably a TURBO of some sort. Something for around 20k with around 20k for modifications and wheels/tires is my price range.
Options as I see it:
1 Subaru STI 04-05 (had one before LOVED it BUT had to buy wifey a mini)
- anyone currently have one and would like to give me some advise?
EVO's need not apply...
2 No Corvette's/American Muscle (don't like the image, NO OFFENSE)
3 944's respectable car but just not for me.
4 E36 M3 (Hard finding a solid car to start with, don't like the styling honestly)
5 Currently have a 997 S AWESOME car to track but to nice to demolish at the track
6 The RS4 4 impressed me beyond belief with grip and grunt at the track which is kind of why I am looking for AWD

ANY SUGGESTIONS

Other Thoughts:
B5 S4 BiTurbo, Audi Quattro, 930 Turbo

Track Experience
4 Auto X
5 DE
1 PBOC
1 NASA
- swapping over to RA888's on CCW's for sure !!!
- Making this a hobby

The seller is a member here as well, I've purchased a car from him in the past, have seen this car in person, and I know that if anything is understating the condition of this vehicle.

M3 may not be #1 on your list, but this one has just been built, and is ready to roll at a great price

Not one of the cars on your list, but 914's are great track cars (both DE's and AX).

Here's one that is nicely set up for sale:

Are you sure you're to tall for lotus elise/exige? I had one and I'm around 6'' and no problem at all... my buddy who is around 6'4 was OK with it too. Getting in is problematic, but once you're in, its very roomy.

From the time I spent on Lotuschat today I have found about 3 article's stating that anyone over 6'3 should look elsewhere. I was very disappointed... Elise's have always been a fav of mine. The turbo one posted earlier was gorgeous. There is an elise over @ a dealer near my home in Daytona, I'll go there tmrw and check it out w/ my helmet.

It is confirmed unfortunately that a 6'5 person will not clear the roof line of a Lotus. I had the salesman measure it, 3 1/4 inch over the top rear hoop. Not even a seat lowering kit could help me. We put the roof panel in and my head was sideways, cant drive like that. Tears....

my opinion is to buy something already set up, instead of having to go through the costs of setting the car up yourself. You will save a lot of headaches and money. Find a proven car, one that has done well on the track. Are you looking just to do HPDEs, or to race wheel to wheel? Also you have to see what clubs or events are popular in your area or among your group of friends. If its the PCA, try to find a 911 SC or 968 (saw you dont want a 944, but how about a 968?) and run in E stock (old F stock). Its popular, competitive and costs are far lower than running some of the higher classes. If you dont care whether you race pca, buy a spec miata. There is tons of competition, its cheap, parts are cheap and they are really a whole lot of fun! Whatever you do, try to find a car already set up, you will save a lot of money! good luck

Thats the thing, I know how to set up cars properly. I have been obsessed with racing/cars my entire life, as all of you I can only imagine. I rebuilt my first boxer motor when I was 14 with my friends dad and at 16 did an entire rear end rebuild on a 930 with a neighbor. History from there on, I really want to build it up myself thats 1/2 the fun. Suspension and re-build's aren't scary for me at all, the only scary part is signing the check for the parts. If I blow up a motor or fry a turbo I can rebuild it, If my car isn't turning in as quick as I want it too I know what tweak to pull. Now that I'm established, can go to the track with out sacrificing an entire weeks pay as I did when I was younger I can spend time/cash/effort in creating my own monster. My ultimate retirement goal in life is to start/open a garage near a race track and be a veteran track rat. So I need all the practice I can get.

NASA HPDE's -> eventually Time Attack, PCA White/Red/Black, Chin School's, is what the car will be used for.
