Do you wear balaclavas and HANS for DE? Or just tracking? Or both?
Thank you

as for DE only:

balaclavas are a personal choice

Many DE' ers who have race seats and harnesses do not wear HANS devices if the car still has an air bag. But I think thats a mistake and will learn to wear one this year as I have switched to gt3 seats and harnesses.

What is your preference?

DE's, on balance, are pretty safe affairs but bad stuff can and occasionally does happen. The more safety equipment and fire retardant clothing you use, the better off you will be should it be your unlucky day. A HANS device requires a roll bar and 5 (or more) point harnesses to use. Simpson makes a device called the Hybrid Pro Rage Restraint which is compatible with a standard 3 point belt and is certified by the SFI; racing's sanctioning body. I use one of these. Either one should prevent your neck from snapping in a front or side impact situation.

A balaclava can save your face and neck in the event of fire. Probably more practically, it will keep your helmet from getting so smooged up on a hot day that you want to throw it away rather than stick your head back inside of it for your next run session. I carry two; that way one is always dry on a hot day.

Many of us who also do a bit of racing and own a driver's suit will wear those for DE's although they can get uncomfortably warm on a hot day. (Most race cars have cool suit systems which mitigates that problem.) A better-than-nothing alternative to wearing a cotton t-shirt and blue jeans is to purchase and use a fire retardant shirt, underwear and socks. Hope that helps. Have fun!
