I have a 2012 and 2013 Passat TDI and the only parts made in Germany are the motor and trans. It has about 75% USA made parts right in TN. The 2012 has over 12,000 miles with a total average of 42.9MPG. I love them both!
A VW rep told me with a cold air intake and DPF delete you can pick up an additional 10+mpg. When the warranty is up i plan on giving it a try.
As soon as we can get the bluemotion wagon we will be getting two of those. They should arrive in 2015.

Looking forward to the bluemotion but im definitely grabbing a tdi in the near future.

You are thinking of the previous generation motor. The current set-up has has had no failures that I have seen on the TDI forums.

There have been no significant changes to the fuel system in 09-12 tdi's to deem them less failure prone.
