Misfires

My son has a 2000 GTI 1.8 turbo. Car has been running great but the other day on his way to work it started to misfire. I have an OBD-II which said it's a misfire. Now I don't know why I spent the money on a program reader when we knew it was a misfire. Anyway, what could it be? Coil packs? Plugged exhaust...ie: bad catalytic convertor? O2 sensors? Any help will be appreciated. BTW...I ordered new coil packs from a local parts store that will received them by 11 this morning. Thanks for any help you can give before then.

Thank you for the info.

Picked up the coil packs and since you can't return for a refund if you install them I used only one and by trial and error installed/uninstalled it on each cylinder and each time the engine would misfire after reaching 3600 rpm. It would idle perfectly. So I was able to return 3 of the coil packs.

I removed the spark plugs, starting from passenger side to drivers side, and saw oil in the combustion chamber of the first 3 cylinders. The 4th was bone dry. I'm assuming it's possible the problems could be from bad rings or valves.

My son wants to try and keep the GTI so I'll look at it again tomorrow but I think this problem is above my pay scale.

Thanks again for responding with a solution.
