996 vs 997 tranny

Can the 997 tranny parts use in the 996? Specifically the lsd?

I have a local track racer upgrade his stock 997 lsd to the aftermarket unit. He willing to sell the stocker for cheap, but can I use it in the 996?

Yes, you can use it.

The stock 997TT/GT LSD is not very aggressive (28/40, I believe...) but still it should be a VAST improvement if you are currently driving without LSD. Whether RWD or AWD, LSD is a must for these cars.

You might want to weigh the cost vs getting a Guard unit setup. I'm pretty sure that would be a more effective way to go. I don't think the 997 LSD were much better and some of the pics posted by Guard in the past actually made them look like a step backwards in terms of quality of memory serves.

Thank you Steve.

Like some members said that I can use the 997 LSD in my 996 tranny. So I check the Quaife web site, 996 have a different part # than 997 so now I'm even more comfused.

guard not more effective for a street car. a street car will not suffer for having saved the few $k difference btw say a guard 40/60 and a wavertrac. also, contrary to myth, there is NO open diff condition e.g. "tailsnap/wag while hard/trail braking with the wavettrac which was the primarily EARLY complaint of a TBD lsd over a "proper" plate type e.g. guard et al.

but agree, it is a MUST have if one is serious about having power to the rear wheels at all time. i know i am.

also agree the 997 or gt2 lsd aint enough to really get it done under demanding conditions, but that is purely conjecture on my part. no one keeps em, that much i know lol

i looked at giken/quaife/guard.. and went with the wavetrac at 1295. never looked back.

How expensive is the Guard? I didn't think it was an extreme cost and being able to do it yourself without having to have gear lash reset seems an advantage. Just looked, $3300 from Champion - ouch! That may kill that idea dead

matt at guard 3 yrs ago quoted me upwards of 3k for their plate type. i didn't get far enough to talk about the setup i wanted. i did enough research to KNOW the trac was i'd need or want. i remember 32 and i were both making that purchase around same time. btw its not 1200 anymore. i pd 1295 and I'm fairly sure they've gone up a smidgen since then. but maybe steve has a deal.

its also not to be overlooked that guard SELLS their own version of a billet wavetrac. i mean thats gotta tell ya something. it all comes down to how/where you primarily PUSH the car. track full time?? or more probably some two lane hills/mts/ pulls whatever.

i will never have to rebuild my "trac or wear it out. i could imagine my wearing out a plate type. hell yeah. plus ( and even more importantly ) the rear endtailwag/snap on trail braking that used to occur open diff or even with OLDER versions of a TBD lsd IS NOT PROMINENT with a tbd wavetrac under hard trail braking downhill on sharp twists. uphills? for get it. its sick.

its 1/3 the price of a guard. my mention/comparison is not to diminish or even compare a built guard ( duh ) to a wavetrac,.. for anything other than "intended usage".

the wavetrac is not yer dads' torque biasing differential lol

Thats for a G50 box, heres a reply I got from Quaife when I asked about it as im in the process of buying a diff

Hello John,

No that is not the same diff.

The QDF2Q is for the Porsche G50.

The QDF7Q is similar to the QDF14Q, with the difference being the QDF7Q has no drive flange retainers.

This means the QDF7Q is for push in flanges, and the QDF14Q is for bolt in flanges.

Please see attached drawings of QDF2Q, 7Q and 14Q so you can see the differences. Again, you will need to make sure which diff is the correct fitment for your vehicle.

given your std MT and all MT 96t g'boxes are m96/g50? it would appear steve has linked http://www.quaifeamerica.com/qdf2q.html you to the correct quaife unit. if there is any ambiguity, it appears in the cut and paste from their reply to you in which they seem to suggest that "The QDF2Q is for the Porsche G50" which only suggests that your initial enquiry pointed them to one that was indeed NOT correct for a g50 box.

what you need.

i would carefully check prior to purchase though, as i do recall a guy buying an incorrect wavetrac which was configured for a n/a 996. better to be right once.
