Are the GT2 1-3 gears worth it?

I am looking to build soon. Rods/ k24s/ E85 with a goal of 700ish rwhp and the occasional 800+ Fwy pull/ Half mile event.. Not really planning on dragging the car. My trans has a nasty 1st gear pop out and will be addressed when the motor/ comes out. I know 3rd gear has been known to shear out. I am looking for a middle ground of reliable power and longevity. So my question is 1-3GT2 gears worth the coin? I don't wanna deal with pop-outs/ losing 3rd. Maybe I should source a 997tt box?

Also what clutch would you guys recommend for a setup like this?

or do I need something beefier aka twin/triple disc?

Once you have a motor and tranny build along with a fuel system then you might as well go to 1000hp levels. 1200 if you get a 3.8 with iron liners.

7GT2 gears fit in the 996 box right? Should I go steel syncros 1-3 and keep the rest OEM?

I was considering 3.8 and giving myself headroom later down the road. I knowing myself I probably will end up with 1000+

I want to get used to the 700ish levels for a bit and then when I get bored, swap the k24s and go for it. Besides pinning the coolant fittings, what else should I fix/ replace while the motor is out? Sensors? prone to failure hoses? So far on my list all I have is coilpacks and I am going to do the waterpump.

Yah there are a lot of things. First the lifters in the 996 are failure prone and should be replaced. Around $2000 for a whole set. Head porting and valve springs are an option if you want to rev high and make huge power. Most guys replace all the rubber hoses as well. You kind of have to decide how far you want to go before you do the build. Sean at Silly Rabbit Motorsports over in Las Vegas builds a good engine and is the best bargain in the industry. You might contact him.

Definitely worth the coin, I also did steel syncros but not needed.
LSD is a must however, night and day difference in stability under braking.
1st gear is useful, 2nd gear fine around town, the taller ratios really fit the nigher power well.

I plan on doing the wavetrac unit. Especially since I just converted to RWD. has anyone sheared a GT2 3rd gear? Would 700ish rwhp be around the limit for the stock 996tt 3rd?

I have 1-4 7GT2 gears. Excellent upgrade. Worth the $ for sure. About $3k or so in parts if I recall. The above clutch kit is good but the flywheel is not. Swap in a Sachs Motorsport 487 or 764. The 487 is Sachs strongest but money well spent.

Don't waste your money on a 997TT box. It's shorter geared than a 996TT box. 7GT2 box is the way to go. Get a good LSD..
