oil pressure issue? maybe Im just crazy.
So Ive noticed something new since I got my car back recently from a body shop. Normally dont pay attention to my o/p gauge but started to notice a few things different. When I start the car, its topped out at 5 bars. It stays at 5 bars while the car is warming up and will drop to about 4.5 bars at idle. When the car is fully warmed up it goes back to normal idle which is 2-2.5 bars but under load, even at 1.5k rpms, it peaks up to 5 bar. Has anyone had this issue because it certainly isnt a normal.?

That's how mine read when I was running Castrol 10-60W. I'm using JG DT40 now and the range when warm is 1.5 at idle to a little over 4 with hot oil. Your's sounds a little high if you are running 5/40W. when was your last filter change?

Last oil/filter change was back in october before I purchased the car. Thing is this just started happening about a week ago. Before than it was nothing out of the ordinary.

I'm no expert on the oiling systems of these cars but I did get a little worried running the 10/60W. Conventional wisdom says more oil pressure is better but not at the expense of flow/volume. As the oil get's older you should notice less OP not more so it sounds like something is going on to increase it and whatever that is may not be good.

When I first start mine up, the oil pressure pegs at 5 at idle. After it warms up, and I start driving it bumps down to 3.5-4 then drops back to 2 or 2.5 at idle. I thought this was normal but I'm no expert.

Mine runs at the 5 bar when under load, when just cruising just a hair below, and when at idle about 2.5. You're fine.
Anything between 3.5 and 5 at 5000 rpm is within Porsche specs.

It's no wonder you stress over it. I think everyone who owns a 996 does. All you read about in the forums is "catastrophic engine failure", "IMS/RMS" issues, "water pump plastic blades breaking", "what oil to use", "coolant issues", etc. I think the only problem I've had with my Z06 is the ECBM module going fubar. Easy to remove, well kind of, but no other problems to speak of.

Lol I totally agree with you. thats one of the problems with joining forums is you have to filter through all the negative concerning stuff ( which I just added to by making this thread).
I'm coming from a b7 Audi prior to my 996 that had this crazy ticking issue, when I was told by Audi it was normal, I jumped ship and got the 996.

As RDyKmans noticed, oil pressure will vary slightly depending on what oil you're using. OP, I think you should be more worried if it reads lower than normal. I think you're fine in what you described.

My issue is almost the opposite of what I have see posted concerning oil pressure issues with the 996.
I have an '01 996 C4 Cab that made my heart stop yesterday...and not in a good way. When I started it cold, the oil pressure read between 1-2 (cold) and the needle did not respond to the throttle at all. I shut it off immediately and waited a few seconds and tried it again. With the key in the "On" position, but not started the needle went to 1-2. When I started it, the needle didn't move. I am hoping this is sensor issue, or that the gauge has somehow failed. Is there a way to test the sensor or gauge without buying a new one? Or am I missing the real problem?
