MSN Autos #1 Gas Guzzler 2010

A friend sent me this article.

1. Porsche Cayenne GTS

Porsche Cayenne GTS

So what takes top honors as the vehicle with the worst fuel economy of the bunch? A Hummer? A gigantic Ford truck? Nope. The 2010 Porsche Cayenne GTS is guilty as charged when it comes to the thirstiest vehicle on the road for less than $100,000. This high-riding German utility vehicle uses a 4.8-liter V8 engine with 405 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque. All that grunt serves up the embarrassing EPA numbers of 11 mpg city/17 mpg highway. How bad is that? That's just 13 mpg combined. To make matters worse, the more potent Cayenne Turbo gets better mileage. The Cayenne GTS is priced at $71,600.

and the manual GTS has worse mileage than the auto due to gearing.

My 957 turbo could get 13.5 mpg out of New England traffic. Why does the less power version GTS do it even worse?

The GTS manual is rated at 11/17 because of the gearing. 4.11 vs. 3.55.

Auto or manual? The autos have taller gearing.

This is my best highway mileage to date.

Yep, its an auto.

I typically take 50 to South Lake Tahoe for the weekend and then ski Kirkwood on weekends. I take 88 and then wander through the Delta, so I usually bypass traffic and probably average 60 because of all the side roads.

I'll take a pic of my mileage to and from the mountains on my next trip.
