I believe it's a dealer job. Happy to be corrected, though!

Rich, you are correct a trip to the dealer with the car and new remote is needed as I got it done this summer. Be careful about buying them on flea bay as you need a code that they usually don't have with them and if you don't provide the dealer the code they can't help you. Irish07 had a post on this I believe... I bought mine (plastic FOB) from the dealer and got it programed along with the metal key to unlock the doors if the battery goes dead, they have to order that key directly from AM in the UK which comes cut for the car.

fleabay ones will almost never have the code. i looked into this rather in depth. your cheapest bet will be ambits (and hope they still sell a single fob as opposed in pairs only). then take that with the code they provide to your dealer for matching, you'll get charged for 1 hr of labor.

And also check with your dealer to see if they will program FOB that you bring in... I didn't take a chance and bought mine from Decarie Motors in Montreal and they programed it.

I purchased a blank un cut key and remote from Aston Bits, it came with codes, dealer did the program (charged 1 hour @ Aston rates) had the key cut at a key cutting place no issues. Not sure I would risk ordering a pre cut key even from Aston via the Vin number, most key cutting services can copy it over without a problem.
Talking to them when they paired the car with the remotes and new key transponder they said they simply add the new codes into the cars data base, max 4 units can be in the car program then they deliete if you need a new one.

Two weeks later I found the original so about 3 grand down I now have three remotes and keys

In my case I didn't have an original Metal key to copy so the only way to get one was through AM using my VIN.

Resurrecting an old thread. I bought a new AM key set (crystal + plastic) with the codes and took it to my local dealer for programming. They said the plastic key works perfect (start and unlock), but that the crystal key will start but not lock/unlock. Any advice before I pick the car up?

Who did you buy the crystal key from? Either the dealer you took it to for programming hasn't programmed it correctly, or the key is defective.
