GT42 help

Hey you guys was looking to put a GT42 on my GTR.. EVERYONE but the person who gave me the turbo says its a bad idea.. Would you guys go with the HUGE turbo for 900hp or so... or go with the one that has a power band as smooth as god and give you 700?

I ask this... as i dont know.. GT42 or HKS T04z... both of them have the same flange and exhaust outing size...problem is when you put the GT42 next to the T04z..it looks like the GT42 crapped out the T04z

Peak power isn't what its all about, if you make 900awhp in the last 1000rpm of your powerband what use is it? Its alot better to utilize say 600-700awhp across the powerband than making peak power.

well, i can tell you the t04z wont make 900whp.. maybe 750whp.. its a 67mm turbo.. not even the same power output as the gt42.. the gt42-76 is good for about 1000whp... the spool characteristics of these two turbos are not even close.. comparing apples to oranges

Most likely he didn't have the 76mm GT42 as that is a Precision-only version. The turbo that comes from Garrett is the GT4294 or GT4202. There are now two trims of the GT4294 - one designed for the K-series Honda racers in NHRA which is the 68mm wheel from the GT4094R. The standard GT4294 is a 70.3mm inducer, and the GT4202 has a 74.3mm inducer. They are good for approximately 800 and 900rwhp respectively on a rwd manual transmission car. 68mm version slightly less.

As Chidoks said, T04Z is significantly smaller than all of these.

The other way you could do it is to upgrade the twins instead of going single. We just did that on a friends car, put twin GT28's on there with new tomei manifolds and downpipes. It still needs to be tuned so I dont have any numbers on it yet. My friend is trying to do that JDM tuner look so he is currently redoing all the intercooler pipeing so I dont know when it will be tuned. If you change your mind on the single, I know who has a pair of turbos that are a bolt on replacement for the stock twins.

I agree and keep it twin's. smoother response and insane top end

42R is a bad idea for a GT-R. insane top end and thats it. drivability sucks.

I use 42R's in fwd drag cars. thats all they are good for, is drag cars
