1996 Viper to Snake Across Block at Barrett-Jackson Hot August Nights Auction

1996 Dodge Viper

Each year, Barrett-Jackson holds world-famous auctions in Scottsdale, Arizona; Palm Beach, Florida and Las Vegas, Nevada.

For 2013, Barrett-Jackson has introduced a new event in Reno, Nevada — the Hot August Nights Auction Presented by Barrett-Jackson, happening August 8th to the 10th at the Reno-Sparks Convention Center. The new auction will serve as one of the main attractions during the 27th annual Hot August Nights classic car festival, which brings in hundreds of thousands of people for its show-n-shines, cruises, drag races and concerts.

Here is one of the classics that will be crossing the auction block in Reno:

Barrett-Jackson Lot 416 – 1996 Dodge Viper RT/10

1996 Dodge Viper 2

Picture it: the year is 1996 and the most expensive and powerful production U.S. sports car is the Dodge Viper. Seventeen years later, the classic snake is appealing as ever. The example we have here has some show to accompany its go. Bright yellow rims and decals appear charming on a car as ostentatious as the Viper. Have a look inside and you’ll see the red-leather-wrapped steering wheel, shift knob and parking brake handle contribute to a venomous interior that might conjure images of blood oozing out of a fresh snake bite. There are many who have driven this era of Viper who if faced with the choice of experiencing a snake bite or driving the Viper again, they’d pick the snake bite … and that, my friends, is what makes the Dodge Viper RT/10 so remarkable.

Granted, earlier-model Vipers only become miserable on longer drives, so fortunately, it wouldn’t take long for you to get your jollies before you catch heat stroke from poor insulation. The 8.0L V10 muscles this car to 60 mph in 4.0 seconds. It will hit the quarter mile in 12.3 seconds at 116 mph. With only 12,15o miles on the odometer, this car is likely to achieve numbers that fast for a long time to come. Heck, the thing isn’t even broken in.

The Hot August Nights Auction serves as the replacement for the popular Barrett-Jackson Orange County Auction that ran from 2010 to 2012. According to Barrett-Jackson, the Southern California event outgrew its location at the Orange County Fairgrounds in Costa Mesa.

Hot August Nights kicks off Friday, August 2nd and Saturday, August 3rd on the Nevada side of south Lake Tahoe. The event continues in Reno/Sparks August 6th to 11th.
