Ayrton Senna’s Ghost Laps Suzuka

When Mercedes-Benz re-entered Formula 1 as a car constructor and not just an engine manufacturer something was bound to give. What gave was the German giant’s engine supplies. Mercedes claimed they were cranking out an unsustainable amount of power plants. Then Mercedes signed McLaren star driver Lewis Hamilton the relationship between the teams seemed to have its irreconcilable differences.

Enter Honda. The Japanese auto-maker has supplied engines in Formula 1 and even had their own team. They left the sport for a little while, but now they’re back, supplying engines for McLaren in the 2014 season.

The Japanese auto-maker are getting the word out about their return to the sport with a new video that features some great history.

The most famous man to ever race a car with Honda power was Aryton Senna. Tragically killed in 1994 while racing for Williams, Aryton Senna’s presence still looms large in the sport. Drivers, pundits, and fans still call him the best ever, and his iconic white and red Mp4-5 might be the most famous Honda powered car ever.

McLaren and Honda would like to remind us all of the great triumphs the two have had together, especially the unforgettable race that took place during the 1989 race at the Suzuka Circuit in Japan.

Honda still has the telemetry from Senna’s car and replicated his lap in a spooky arrangement of speakers and lights. Check out the video from Honda, and onboard footage of Senna at Suzuka.
