One of only 40 examples in existence, this R33 GT-R 400R is the only one in the United States. Furthermore, it’s worth well over $1 million.

Not too long ago, we brought you the story of the remarkably rare R33 Nissan Skyline GT-R Nismo 400R. This car is truly what dreams are made of for any collector in the field of JDM classic sports cars. The primary reason it’s so sought after is its rarity itself. Only 40 400R models were ever made. So, seeing one running around even in Japan carries a slim-to-none odds set. Furthermore, none were originally sold in the US, and this one, owned by Top Rank Imports out of California, is the only one here. Ultimately, if you live in the US, your chances of seeing a 400R in person are virtually zero. Needless to say, for these reasons, we were beyond excited to see the Top Rank 400R at SEMA.

SEMA really is a magical place in that front. Running into a car you’re not likely ever to see again is a pretty common occurrence around here. That being said, we still cannot stress enough how insane it is to see one of these 400R Skylines in person. Believe it or not, this is one of the most expensive cars that could be found at SEMA. Currently, Hagerty estimates that a Concours condition low-mileage 400R is worth over $1.5 million.

Additionally, even a fair-condition one is said to be worth $800,000, according to Hagerty’s valuations. You must be wondering, then, what makes this thing so unique? Aside from the obvious rarity, there must be something else going on, right?

What Exactly Is A Nismo 400R?

The 400R was built by Nissan’s Motorsports division, Nismo. It serves as a celebration of the R33 GT-R race cars that ran in the 24 Hours of Le Mans. The name is a not-so-cryptic code revealing that the engine makes 400 horsepower. Additionally, the R stands for racing. Even though a standard-issue R33 GT-R is no joke, the 400R really takes it to the next level.

The most notable change from a standard GT-R to the 400R is the monumentally upgraded variant of the RB26 engine under the hood. Nismo dubbed this variant the RBX-GT2. It has an increased bore, making the displacement 2.8-liters instead of the standard 2.6. Furthermore, it has polished ports, a beefed-up crankshaft, and higher lift camshafts. The final power numbers come to 400 horsepower and 346 pound-feet of torque.

These numbers equate to a remarkable sprint from zero to 60 miles per hour in just four seconds. This put the 400R in a similar acceleration range as the Lamborghini Diablo and nearly a second faster than the Ferrari F355.

Other than the upgraded performance specs, the 400R also has many characteristic aero and exterior cues. The unique Nismo wheels, the rear wing, bumper and hood, carbon taillight surrounds, and side skirts are unique to the 400R. Furthermore, many components like the steering wheel, front grille, gauge cluster, and seats wear Nismo and 400R badging.

Once In A Lifetime Opportunity

Ultimately, we are still feeling a bit of shock and awe that we got to see this car in person. If you ever have the opportunity to see a 400R in person, don’t hesitate to take it. You will not regret it. Unfortunately, though, it is an exceedingly rare opportunity.

If you’d like to get just a taste, though, check out the photo gallery below for more detailed photos of the 400R.
