Porsche 911: Number 1,000,000

Last month on May 11th, the one-millionth 911 rolled off the production line. In this segment, Dr. Wolfgang Porsche talks about the his brother Ferdinand “Butzi” Porsche, the designer of the original 911. As a purist, Butzi envisioned the 911 of being a pure sports car – Nothing more than it needed to be. Many people have said that the 911 has changed over the years. Dr. Wolfgang mentions that the original 911 DNA has always been instilled in each generation and the tradition will keep going forward. The one-millionth 911 (Carrera S) painted in Irish Green was an homage to Wolfgang’s father, Ferry Porsche, who owned one of the very first 911s painted the same color.

The Endurance Test: Thirty Hours in the 919 Hybrid

Prior to the 24 Hours of LeMans, Porsche Works went to Circuit Paul Ricard in Le Castellet, France for a rigorous 30-hour endurance test. LeMans requires intense preparation, as it is the world’s most prestigious race of the year. Porsche set out to put the entire team to the ultimate simulation process for 30 straight hours. At the end of the test, the 919 Hybrid crossed the finish line with flying colors, a huge confidence booster for the team.

Project Luna: 944 S from the Earth to the Moon

When the 944 S debuted in 1987, Austrian world record distance/economy driver Gerhard Plattner wanted to showcase the new model’s road capability and reliability by starting “Operation Luna 944”. The goal was easy. Drive the 944 S the distance from the earth to the moon: 384,400 kilometers (238,900 miles). In 258 days and 5 continents, Plattner accomplished his mission in record time becoming the “Fastest journey around the world in a serial production car”.

Precision Job: A Look at the Porsche Quality Center

Getting a glimpse at the Porsche Quality center, it’s very apparent that cleanliness, efficiency, and organization is the prime focus. A first rate environment will allow for first rate  work to be carried out. In the quality center, all components are gathered, installed, and inspected to bring vehicle projects into series production. Superb quality is extremely important to Porsche.

One Million Kilometers: Bill MacEachern and his 930

William “Bill” MacEachern is the original owner of this black 930 Turbo which currently has an odometer reading of 725,000. That equates to a monumental 1,150,000 kilometers. After 41 years of driving together with his machine, there are no signs of stopping as his ultimate goal is to get to the coveted 1 million-mile mark. Bill owns a carpet cleaning business that requires him to drive to customers, which he doesn’t mind doing because it gives him the opportunity to rack up more miles on the 930. A true motoring enthusiast indeed, how can you not be romantic about cars?
