991 Carrera S Nurburgring Time is Crazy Quick

No, it didn’t beat the 918, obviously. Porsche’s 991 Carrera S isn’t hyper car fast, but it’s still capable of outrunning most things on the road with four wheels. To be honest, even motorcycles have trouble keeping pace with ring times like these.

The capable hands of Timo Kluck took the 991 around the Nordschliefe in 7:37. Without context, that number probably doesn’t mean much. For reference, the outgoing 997 Carrera S went 7:50 around the ring. That’s pretty good! Now consider this. Walter Rohrl, the legendary rally driver, managed to lap the ring in a 997 GT2 in 7:32. By that logic, the Carrera S is about on par with the outgoing GT2 in terms of track ability. Since it’s not as powerful, these gains are probably the most obvious expression of the 991’s improved chassis that we’ve seen yet. It’s also a convincing argument for PDK.

More than that… Can you imagine the 991 Turbo? Or the GT2? Those cars are going to incredible. Porsche’s heritage is built on racing and it shows. If they keep this up, the ring’s leader board is going to start looking mighty crowded by nines and ones.

Watch the whole run on video below. If you wan’t more info on the current gen 911, you can get your fill at New Car Test Drive. Otherwise, you can head to the forums to talk about it here.
