Another “Used” 911R Has Hit the Market

Do you remember when Porsche 911’s were considered driver’s cars? Truly, they represented one of the purist driving experiences, with whimsically talkative steering and split personality handling that went from demure to razor sharp really rather quickly all while being generally heralded for their reliability and robust powertrains (other than the odd, ropy gearbox here and there). Ah, so charming, the Porsche 911.

Sadly, when speaking of Porsche 911’s these days, the most common thought is regarding the massively expensive, used Porsche market which has been a bubble, seemingly ready to burst for years. Buying the “right” Porsche is better than buying gold when it comes to resale value. The marque has become rife with speculators who buy the cars new, quarantine them in a protective cocoon and resell them a few months later for double their money. These special models of an already special model tend to be track-focused and raw, offering their services as the modern guard of what Porsche 911’s of old stood for. Which makes it all the worse that they will never see the mountain roads or race tracks that mankind hath built seemingly for these cars’ raison d’être. Ferry Porsche once said “Our cars are meant to be driven, not polished.” I presume Mr. Porsche is rolling over in his grave at the attitude people have taken to his fine automobiles.

The latest example of this is the universally lauded 911R. Just 991 examples were built (to signify the 991 generation of the platform) and they were sold out before they were ever even built. It features a 500 horsepower naturally-aspirated flat six pulled from it’s GT3RS stablemate, which revs to a stratospheric 8800RPM, and crucially, is mated to a 6-speed manual transmission. From there, everything was pared down as much as possible, meaning than a 911R was about 150 pounds lighter than the already light GT3RS, weighing in at a scant 3020lbs. The interior is retro cool, with groovy patterns and plaid, just like your dad’s old air-cooled. Like an “unplugged” performance from an 80’s metal band. Needless to say, when one comes on the market, it’s a big deal. The last “used” 911R that appeared on the United States’ market was listed for sale at a cool $1.3 million dollars this past summer. Pretty impressive for a car listed at $185,000 new before the inevitable mark up. Like we said, a better turn on the money than gold.

Perhaps that makes the latest 911R to hit the market a relative bargain, as this one is listed up at a mere $699,000. Exotic Euro Cars in Woodland Hills, CA, just West of Los Angeles has confirmed their allocation of this particular 911R. That’s right, they don’t even have it yet, and are already reselling it. So I guess the real question is: how soon can I send the check?
