Audi Welcomes Porsche Back to LeMans with a Burnout

Porsche used to own Le Mans  (figuratively of course). From 1970 to 1998, they won 16 constructor championships, destroying Ferrari’s record -which only required a single digit to write- of 9. Porsche left to go and perfect the road car, and Audi took their place, winning 12 of the next 14 years. Audi’s domination of this race is more concentrated, more consecutive, making it arguably more impressive.

Then Porsche announced its return, debuting the 919 to much fan fare. It’s like Ali coming back to fight Tyson, with a body that is impervious to aging.

And Audi welcomed Porsche back in a way that would be right at home in a boxing weigh-in; by sending their race car to taunt Porsche on its own front yard.

The smoke looks like CGI, and obviously the message is fake, but it’s a smart little slam. Considering both companies are under the VW Group umbrella, everyone stands to benefit from building this rivalry, but business case aside, it’s nice to see some smack talk between such big, calculating companies. The personalities in racing are important, and today, when every letter, tweet, ad, and sponsorship is calculated with the forethought of a war, it’s nice to see some taunting.
