The Big Fat 2014 Porsche 911 Targa Gallery

Ah yes, the Targa. It’s the most stylish car in the Porsche lineup. It’s expensive, for one, but also it’s more than a little bit unnecessary. It’s not going to go any faster than a Porsche 911 Carrera S or a 4S and you’ll have all the complexity of a convertible without having a true convertible. So why? Why does this exist?

Back in the sixties, the US was in a frenzy about convertibles being unsafe. They were right to be. At the time, there was no such thing as a pop-up roll bar, so flipping your car was essentially a death sentence. The Targa top was invented by Porsche to get around that issue. As a result, they’ve a created an enduring body style. Is it necessary? No. Is it normal? Nope. But it is cool. And really, that’s all it needs to be.

If a Carrera 4S isn’t fast enough, you should probably be looking at the GT3 and the Turbo anyway. If you are desperate for people to see you in your Porsche from every angle, then you should definitely spring for the Cabriolet. The Targa is the car that exits purely for the sake of style. It’s engineering for engineering’s sake.

For that reason, it’s probably the coolest car in their lineup. I want one. Badly.
